“You need to calm down, Stevie,” Bucky chided as he watched his lifelong friend pace the living room.
“I know it's just...”
“She's your kid and you still think of her as the cute little three year old who showed up all those years ago.”
Sigh. “Yeah.”
Bucky stood and clapped his flesh hand on Steve's shoulder. “We all do, Stevie. Her and Xander and Willow.”
Steve nodded his agreement.
“Now let's sit down. She'll be here in a few minutes. Besides, you should be happy that she trusts you enough to bring him home. Remember, just because this is the first serious boyfriend doesn't mean she's going to marry him, not when she knows how much finishing college means to you.”
“You're right,” Steve agreed. “And I have to let her explore on her own so she isn't smothered.”
Before Bucky could respond, the door swished open and they spotted Buffy standing in the doorway, head turned to look over her shoulder as she laughed at something the person behind her said.
Turning forward, her face lit up as she spotted her father and uncle waiting for her. “Dad, Uncle Bucky, I'd like you to meet my boyfriend,” she greeted, stepping inside, pulling the man behind her and into the room. “Well, actually, he's my fiance. We're going to be married.”
Before she could continue, the man in question looked up at them from where he had been focused on Buffy and Steve recognized him instantly and couldn't help his choked exclamation, “Loki.”
“No!”
The sound of his denial echoed in the room as Steve sat bold upright in bed. It took him a few moments to realize it had been a nightmare and not in any way real.
Fumbling to release himself from his covers, he threw them off and almost jumped from the bed, reaching for the door, his heart still beating frantically, he paused in front of Buffy's door and took a deep breath. Closing his eyes, he took two more before opening his eyes and the door.
He allowed his eyes a moment to adjust to the slightly different light level before stepping inside and closing the door behind him, eyes drinking in the sight of his little four-year-old Buffy sleeping soundly.
Moving across the floor, he knelt down beside the bed and brushed a few stray hairs away from her face. “I'll always love you,” he whispered. “You're beautiful and precious,” he continued, love for the little girl causing his heart to swell. Then he set his jaw, “But I will be vetting your boyfriends in the future. There is no way I'm ever letting you date Loki and certainly not marry him.”
With a nod to himself, he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead and stood, slipping quietly to his own room and settling in for a few more hours of sleep, hoping for a quiet rest of the night.
He slipped into sleep thinking of his daughter and what fun they would have the next day at the zoo.
The door opened and he and Bucky stood to greet Buffy and her new boyfriend.
“Dad, Uncle Bucky. I'd like you to meet my new boyfriend. He's a Doctor," she introduced smiling and bouncing slightly on her toes as she pulls her beau into the room. "His name is Victor Von Doom.”
“No!”
