Summary: A visit with a Tok'ra. More temporal "Stuff" mentioned.
"It's a beautiful day out, what brings you and your pet here?" the woman with the glowing eyes said. Joyce shivered at her tone.
"An unusual energy reading has come to my attention, Lis'an," Isis said. "Although it looks familiar, I do not recall from where, and suspect you may know." She held out the small notebook Joyce had seen her writing in earlier.
Frowning, Lis'an learned forward and took the notebook. Opening it to the bookmarked page she examined what was written there. "It would be easier if I could examine this with my own instruments," she said. She looked up at Isis. "I'm surprised you've seen this before. And concerned. Where was this?"
"Several local detectives have gone missing," Isis said. "This was taken in their office by the energy detector I've been working on, as I've previously mentioned."
"Ah, yes, that," Lis'an said, in what Joyce thought was a dismissive tone. "As I've told you before, I can provide you with something much more efficient."
"And as I've also said before," Isis said. "I prefer to use something of my own design that is more appropriate for this era."
"Yes, yes," Lis'an said, returning to the notebook. "Interesting. It's the energy signature from a badly tuned matter transfer device."
"Goa'uld?" Isis said.
"Not directly, no," Lis'an said. "This type of device is not compatible with certain organic beings. If there is a Goa'uld involved, the user of this is a servant of one."
"Do you know which one could be behind this?" Isis said. "If it is?"
"They are all accounted for," Lis'an said, shaking her head. "If a Goa'uld is behind this, they are new or have managed to stay hidden since Ra left."
"So, no idea what we may be facing then," Isis said, sighing. "And the missing detectives from Spectral Investigations? Patterson and Franklin? I believe they reside here."
"They did," Lis'an said, suddenly glaring down at Joyce. "As I'm sure you are aware, they took their leave quite suddenly, in an unauthorized manner. Extensive repairs were required to correct the temporal instability they created."
"So it wasn't a simple disappearance," Isis said. "I suspected as much. Did they leave an explanation?"
"Suddenly implies that it is was unexpected," Lis'an said. "It will be a pleasure extracting payment from them when they return."
"You expect them to come back?" Isis said.
"If I have to chase them myself," Lis'an said. "They have some explaining to do. But you are welcome to track them down yourself. It is likely that energy reading has something to do with their exit."
"Any information you'd be willing to share?" Isis said.
"I've given you everything you need," Lis'an said. "I'll be here when you return." Closing the notebook, she handed it back to Isis. "Don't take too long. Now go."
Grimacing at the dismissal, Isis stood up, and reached down to pull Joyce to her feet. Nodding to Lis'an, she turned and walked out of the solarium, Joyce on her heels.
"What was that about?" Joyce said in a whisper, as they passed through the lobby.
"Not here," Isis said. "In private."
----
"I didn't like that woman," Joyce said, watching Andrea, now returned to her normal form, drive away from the mansion. "And not just because her eyes glowed."
"She does not try to be liked," Andrea said. "She is not as arrogant as some, but she considers her people above others. As Isis I have some standing with her. As Andrea... I too would be beneath her notice."
"Why?" Joyce said, curious.
"According to one source, an avatar of Isis was involved in the removal of the false gif Ra. Isis wasn't the only local power involved in that ancient struggle, but this source said the Tok'ra, such as Lis'an, acknowledge Isis as a local Power."
"Okay," Joyce said. "One of those power games. She'll help if Isis asks, otherwise not. Everyone else needs to avoid her and whatever she's watching? These Goa'uld things?"
"Correct," Andrea said, pulling into the school parking lot.
"And this pet thing?" Joyce said, still annoyed. "That wasn't very nice."
"Lis'an recognized you as something other. It's possible she could see your aura, or something else that makes you different ," Andrea said.
"Still not nice," Joyce grumbled.
"At some point we need to have a discussion about Furlings," Andrea said. "My source mentioned them in passing, but was very tight lipped about them."
"I don't really know much. I'll have to check with my mother first," Joyce said. "It's a family secret."
"Understandable," Andrea said.
"What do you think what she said means?" Joyce said. "What was that energy reading and what really happened to Spectral Investigations? And temporal is more of that time stuff, right?"
"I suspect they are not what they appear to be," Andrea said. "Beyond that? More research is required. I'd like to take another look at that office tonight."
"You? Or Isis?" Joyce said, waiting for Andrea to unlock the lab door. "And can I come with you tonight?"
"Come where?" Rennie said, suddenly appearing at the door as Andrea opened it. "Where are we going tonight?"
"We'll discuss it later," Andrea said. "Rennie, why don't you show Joyce your summer project? I don't think she's seen it yet. I think she'll find it interesting."
"Of course, Miss Thomas," Rennie said, grinning. "Come on," she said, grabbing Joyce's hand. "Part of it's up on the roof. It won't make sense unless I show you that part first."
"Lunch in an hour, ladies," Andrea shouted at them as they left the room. Pulling out the notebook from earlier, she frowned. Sitting down at her desk, she grabbed a scrap of paper and a pencil and started writing.
