First of all, he woke up and Dean was gone. Second, there was no sign of the Christmas tree anywhere. Third, Dean was gone. Fourth, this wasn't a motel room. That much was obvious.
There was someone sleeping in the bed next to him, but he just slipped out of it quietly, making his way forward towards the door and bailing for the exit. He needed to get out of there and find a way to get a hold of his father or brother. That was procedure. That was how things were done. He hit the front door of the house and blew through it, only coming to a stop when he saw Dean sitting there.
"Good point," Dean looked around for the store clerk and when he couldn't find him he ended up bagging their things himself. "Sweet, we don't have to pay."
"So there's people, but nobody's managing the stores?" This wasn't making any sense to Sam, and his face said as much. "What if Dad isn't here? What if we were kidnapped or something and Dad can't find us?"
"Yeah, we'll need to if we wanna cook some of this food," he knew that Sam ate like a bird but still had an appetite. He was a growing kid and he remembered how hungry he'd gotten then.
He shuffled to follow his brother out the door, hoping that he was right about the whole Dad thing. Sam was starting to get a not-so-good feeling about this place.
Sam was torn. He was hungry, but his curiosity was starting to get the better of him. He was about to open his mouth and say explore, when his stomach rumbled loud enough for Dean to probably hear it.
When they got to the boarding house it wasn't hard at all to go searching around the drawers for a can opener so that Sam could have some spaghettios. They used to be his favorite and so Dean set to that first.

"Dean?"

"Food," he said sheepishly.

"Maybe this place won't be so bad. We could actually stick around for a while."
