It's love at first sight with only one pair of eyes.

The man she sees in her mind is her favorite kind of hero, the hero who used to be the villian; the hero with blood on his teeth and a Southern smile who slips and fades in a memory that's never constant anymore.

She sits in the dark room and curls her fingers together, breathing in and out in and out. Her arms are numb from the shocks.

"It hurts," she whispers, because she learned a long time ago that there was no point in screaming.

And that's when her mind explodes.

Jasper kisses Alice, and he tastes like cold ice. He smiles on her mouth, pulling back with a lazy smile as he opens his eyes.

Golden bright.

She gasps into the blackness.

Sleep slams into her, so suddenly that she almost collapses onto her tiny bed with tears stinging her dry face, her head pounding with pain that seems to spell out Jasper. Lashes feel weighted down to her cheeks, her limbs like water, and she murmurs I love you to a man who was never there.

"You've done this before, haven't you?"

He nods, looking down. She hasn't changed out of her white wedding dress, but it's so simple it seems like a nightgown.

"Hey."

Her fingers find his.

"It's okay. Why're you embarressed?"

He sighs. "Because you haven't," he tries to explain, but confusion and uncertainty slide off her. He takes another stab. "You're so... innocent."

She laughs, his favorite sound in the world, and doesn't say anthing else.

He looks up. She's never quiet.

Confusion and uncertainty isn't the only thing that's slid off of her.

"Let's change that," she proposes, and he wholeheartedly agrees.
