I don't think this qualifies. If you make the subject that is colored only one color, I would accept that. Or, if you take the colored part and rather than have it be so cleaning colored, make it a single color block, I'd accept that as well.

When trying to come up with monochromatic icons, I ended up with a question: would the use of gradients (from transparent to blue, red etc) be ok? Or would that not be a monochromatic look?

No, that's still considered monochromatic. Gradients are the same thing as shades.

Also, you can do multiple color blocks if you want.

I'm not being too picky about thing since I know it's a really tough challenge. As long as things aren't neatly colored in for colorblocking you can have multiple colors.

Similarly, for monochromatic, you can have 500 shades/gradients of blue as long as they are in the blue family.
