Be warned. Might get a bit sticky or tense in here. But if it gets out of hand, rest assured I'll shut it down. So act respectfully and play nicely and we should all be fine

I don't like it because it does open the door for racial stereotypes more than if it were another format. There may also be those who claim that the tasks are set up to favor one racial group over another. I won't watch it, but I really see trouble brewing. If not within the tribes, then definitely in the blogsphere and beyond

I'll agree that that those born in America generally do a good job assimilating the 'American culture'. It's a big debate here with the high number if illegal immigrants we have and people saying we can't deport the families because the kids don't know Mexico or even Spanish (some born in the US, some brought across very young

My biggest issue or concern with this is that we all know these 'reality' shows aren't real. So if CBS is touting this as racially divided or whatnot, how are they going to edit it and make it LOOK?
In reality, (personal opinion) I don't see race as any different than male/female or the job that you do, but I know people as a whole don't see it that way. Makes it a tough topic to deal with at all.
I don't watch survivor but i did see the e true Hollywood story yesterday...
I think it will probably be well done, they always have types they are filling "Soccer mom" "college student" "business executive" ... if they stay in these groups with the racial groups it should be okay.
Actually, it wouldn't bother me. Because there's nothing that they could say or do on the show that would be anything new for me to hear. We've all heard all the slurs for each religion. And it doesn't change my opinion or beliefs. Whether someone Jewish or Hindi or Buddhist were to win Survivor, it wouldn't challenge those beliefs at all. And like I said, I've already heard all the religious slurs out there about Christians (and Jews and Hindis and Buddhists...) and I know that's not me so I would just mostly see that as a choice by CBS. (Bad choice...but theirs nonetheless.)
I choose to believe what I do though. Race isn't a choice. And I understand that. It's part of what makes this so charged.
The biggest issue is how CBS ends up portraying it I think. We all know they manipulate and edit things to look a certain way, so CBS had better walk carefully in this.
Yeah, I think they're asking for trouble by doing this. I agree with ltgarrix, that if it's not on TV, trouble will definitely abound in the blogosphere and/or fan forums. I don't know if you remember a story that came up during the Hurricane Katrina disaster about the reporter who supposedly labeled pictures of white people carrying items as "salvaging personal items" (or something like that) whereas the captions for the black people carrying thems were labeled as "looters." Of course, the internet almost exploded during that story, and the LJ community where the story was originally posted turned into a huge hate fest.
I don't really like it; I feel that race is a touchy issue as it is - which is ridiculous in this day and age - and to pit races *against* each other just seems wrong. I agree with tiedyed_nerd, what if we did religions? Can you imagine the trouble that would erupt from pinning Christians against Muslims against Jews? Yikes

I think CBS got what they wanted from this. Publicity. And they are shaking it up...whether it's a good shake up or not. Maybe this will be the last season of Survivor
