food for thought

Also, this is really random, but I've seen it done so many times before, and IMO it's so icky that it produces the physical reaction of my scrunching up my nose in disgust--I cannot stand it when pairing names are combined. Like, for example, KuroFay, or DouWata, or even Pipella (though that one is admittedly very funny). There's also HitsuHina, ( Read more... )

It's def. not fair of me to take a pairing or the two characters in that pairing less seriously because of the unintentional bungling on the part of an unassuming fic writer, but that IS what happens, and that's why it peeves me. I hate that my feelings are influenced by what fandom does, but alas, it can't be helped.

The problem is that a lot of people define their lives by how much sex they are or are not having and their importance by whether they're in a relationship or not, much as you said.

I'm not quite sure what you mean? When I said it seems like the character becomes less of a person, I was trying to say that's what the shortening of their name seems to say to me symbolically, at least.

Oh, were you referring to Pipella? That's Pip/Estella c/o Great Expectations, sorry to burst your bubble. (But it's the suggestion of Pip = Cinderella that makes it so funny.)

O--Or I could grow more of a spine! And be all tough! And kick fandom's ass!

But I am still a weakling at the moment. D:

Oh, I get it now. I haven't really seen that in RL, but that's probably because whenever I see couples in public I blissfully block them out of my head with a sense of denial I'm actually quite proud of kthnx because EWWW COUPLES KISSING IN PUBLIC YOU MAKE ME WANT TO VOMIT UP MY BREAKFAST YOU ARE BEING SO FLUFFY. AND CUTE. STOP NOW, PLZ.

^^; As for that happening in fic--like you said, it comes with fandom. All fandoms. Pairing fic gets more recognition than gen any day of the week, and so it only follows that 'KuroFay' will be more preferred and that Fay gen introspective or Kurogane gen introspective will take a backseat in comparison to that.

HAHAHA yes. XDDDD I only get peeved when I see it used for relationships, not that. That is funny, indeed. *snerk*

I don't really see how calling a pairing KuroFai is any worse than writing Kurogane/Fai. It both refers to the same thing? I'm certainly not imagining a conglomerate single entity. But to each their own, and I don't really ship KuroFai anyway. XD

I am biased because I get to call my OTP Sushi. 8)

I do, though. I write 'Kurogane/Fay' all the time, but 'KuroFay' is, to me, ridiculous. It's like the equivalent of calling Fuuma, a complex character one should take seriously, Fuu. Would you take Fuuma seriously if he were constantly called such a name? I wouldn't take Kurogane seriously if he were called Kuro by the rest of the cast of TRC. In the same way, shortening his name to 'Kuro' for 'KuroFay' is just as bad. You can't expect me to treat the concept of the pairing, or the fic itself, with respect if the person who wrote it is suggesting that they don't either. And it does suggest that, to me. It might be irrational of me to feel this way, but that's why I said I was reacting to this emotionally.

I don't really ship KuroFai anyway.

It has nothing to do with what one does or does not ship, IMHO. I don't ship Doumeki/Watanuki, but I read good fic of that pairing all the time from authors who write damn well. Nor I do ship Fuuma/Subaru, ( ... )

Okay, first can I just say I'm replying from a blackberry so my answer may be a little jumpy because I can't check back to your comment as I write this.

Firstly, I didn't at all mean to be dismissive and I'm sorry if it came off that way. I'm not criticising your opinion, just saying I PERSONALLY feel both refer to the same thing. While I would never call Fuuma "Fuu" unless joking around, saying FuuKam doesn't evoke the same nickname-y feel for me. And I only mentioned KuroFai because you mentioned it.

Again, please don't feel I was attacking you or being dismissive. I was just stating how I feel about compressed pairing names, so if it came off as insulting I apologise. I threw in the comment about KuroFai not bothering me because I DO get frustrated about things like "Su-chan" in particular because I'm so very fond of Subaru.

♥?

I didn't feel that you were attacking me at all, and I was saying that if you did disagree with my opinion, I'd be fine with it, of course, so I didn't mean for you to think that you were criticizing me, which I don't believe you were. And it's all right about the dismissive thing--I don't know what's up, but I think I'm reacting to things more emotionally than I would normally, which is not to say that I wouldn't have felt the same way at any other time, but probably that I wouldn't have REacted to it the way I did (which was to quite bluntly inform you that I was hurt). So I apologize too, for my being overly sensitive etc.

I think we're cool?
