The point of the Torchwood Collaboration Festival is to bring together some of the writers in the Torchwood Fandom. Working with a partner gives writers a chance to try new styles, play with different ideas and generate stories that would otherwise be difficult to tackle on your own.
If you've never attempted collaborative fic writing, it can seem daunting. Processes and techniques that you usually work out on your own have to be rearranged to fit in not only another person's ideas, but their writing style and interpretation of the characters as well. Don't let that overwhelm you! The benefits of creating something with another person far outweigh the disadvantages. What a great way to learn a new take on a character you've written hundreds of times, or work out a plot tangle that's been taunting you, or just experience the simple joy of seeing what happens when another person contributes to your idea.
The festival also leaves it up to the writers to decide how they'll collaborate. Let me emphasize that this is not a "round-robin" story game. Each writer will have a chance speak on preferences for a collaboration style, or for a story topic, and they'll be partnered up with another writer based on that. After you've been assigned your partner, it's up to the team to decide how they'll go about writing the actual story. Want to exchange emails of sections written? Get together at a coffee shop? Sit on your instant messenger of choice and plot out the story and write line-by-line? That's up to you.
I know that the idea of working with another person can seem hard, but if you have questions, please feel free to ask!
Rules
There are very few rules for this.
1. Stories must be over 1,000 words. This is an old rule from fests passed. With collaborated stories, it seems that a little length is needed to let both writers shine.
2. Stories can be written in any style or collaboration that the writers prefer. As mentioned above, how you go about writing your story is part of the process.
3. Be kind/respectful of other members of the community and especially to your writing partner. This seems self-explanatory but it's worth repeating. If you're having trouble communicating your assigned partner, please email/PM about it.
4.Stories must be beta-read. You may ask yourself, with two people writing, is that necessary? Oh yeah.
5. Absolutely no character bashing stories. Character bashing is just another way of saying "I wrote this character OOC and don't even care."
