It just (finally!) struck me why these stories feel so bleak, beyond the subject matter, beyond the short, sharp phrases. It's that Ray is such a fluid speaker, he expresses himself in great sheets of improvisatory prose, like Charlie Parker. And here, everything is short, chopped, controlled, as if he's frozen inside.

At least Benny said *something* thank goodness. And I agree with Nina the short sharp sentences really do pack an emotional punch.

I'm glad Benny finally said something.

I know how it is to want to fill the silence with something even if it's nonsense just so one doesn't lose it.

Ray wants Benny to talk, to say anything to kill the loneliness that is inherit in the silence that surrounds them.

It is achingly painful.

Six is back.
