“I can’t even imagine what your dorm room would look like,” I told Alex as I walked into our bedroom, seeing a few books scattered across the floor along with clothes and the blankets pulled off the bed. There was an empty bag of doritos laying on the carpet along with a few empty cans of Rockstar.

“You act like you’re any cleaner,” he answered, running a hand through his messy blonde hair, making it stand up.

“I think I am, babe,” I told him, leaning down to give him a kiss and seeing the orange powder dusting the corner of his bottom lip. I paused, reaching a hand forward and swiping it over his lips. “Just a little.”

“Doritos,” he answered and I laughed.

“Please tell me that this isn’t all you ate today,” I questioned, raising an eyebrow and moving back as he tried to kiss me.

“I don’t even know what time it is, so probably,” he answered, moving forward and stealing a kiss quickly. “This final is killing me, babe.”

“I know, but you still have to take care of yourself, dummy,” I told him. “Are you neglecting our daughter, too?”

“Of course not. I was just taking advantage of her nap time,” he answered and I smiled.

“I’m teasing, babe,” I answered. “Well, mom has to work late so dinner’s up to me, I guess. What do you want?”

“Some fresh crab legs. A nice pasta dish on the side. Oh, and some warm biscuits,” he answered and I rolled my eyes.

“I’ll just go down to the docks and start trapping them right away,” I told him, hearing Alex laugh and feeling him grab a hold of my hips in order to pull me into his lap. I wrapped my arms around his neck, settling my forehead against his.

“Just be careful. They pinch,” he told me, pinching my butt.

“Thanks for the heads up,” I told him, laughing and kissing him gently.

“Do we have any mac and cheese?” Alex asked and I nodded.

I believe we do.”

“I want that for dinner,” he answered and I smiled.

“See, that I can actually do,” I told him.

“Good,” he answered, giving me another quick peck on the lips before pushing me off his lap.

“How much more of your paper do you have to go?” I asked him and he groaned.

“Way too much,” he whined and I laughed.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s all your fault,” he told me, pouting.

“I’ll make it up to you with mac and cheese after I change,” I told him, taking my shirt off and tossing it towards the hamper basket. I unbuttoned my jeans, seeing Alex raise an eyebrow.

“You know, there’s another way you can make it up to me,” he said, eyes sliding over my legs as my jeans slid down further. “You’re already like halfway there, anyway.”

“Um, no,” I said, laughing and bending down to grab a pair of sweatpants from the dresser. “My ass is not gonna be your excuse for not having your final done.”

“Yet you’re bending over and wiggling it in the air in front of me!” he exclaimed and I laughed, sticking my butt out further and exaggerating the movement of my hips. “Come on! That’s not fair! Jack!”

I laughed, standing up and putting my sweatpants on. “Finish your paper and then we’ll talk about what my ass can do for you.”

“What about a quickie? A short break won’t hurt,” he said, grabbing a hold of my hand and trying to pull me closer.

“No,” I told him, drawing out the vowel. “Do your paper.”

“I’d rather do you,” he told me, wiggling his eyebrows and I shook my head.

“Paper first,” I told him, kissing his forehead and wiggling my hand out of his grip.

“No!” he whined as I moved towards the door. “Babe! Come back and do me!”

I laughed, turning back around and shaking my head with a teasing smile as I slipped out the door. I walked downstairs, finding Zack rummaging through the fridge and hip-checking him out of the way.

“Um, ouch,” he answered and I laughed.

“I’m making macaroni and cheese,” I told him, opening the cupboard and taking out a box of shells.

“You are?” May asked, walking into the room and holding a freshly awoken Josie. I grinned at my daughter, picking her up and snuggling her. “Are you staying for dinner, babe?”

“Why are you even asking? When does the kid ever go home?” I teased, watching May roll her eyes.

“Shut up, Jack,” she responded and I made a face at her. Josie giggled and I smiled, kissing her cheek.

“Josie thinks I’m funny,” I told her and she raised an eyebrow.

“I’m glad you can make eight-month-old infants laugh,” she told me. “I’m so proud of you.”

“She’s just jealous ‘cause we’re best friends,” I told Josie, nodding my head seriously and watching her smile brightly.

“Dee!” she squealed, laying her face on my shoulder.

“But I gotta put you down so I can make dinner, my love,” I told her, holding her back out to May.

“How’s Alex doing on his paper?” May asked, adjusting the squirming baby in her arms. Zack held his arms out for her, and May handed her to him before he walked into the living room so she could play.

“Being whiney as fuck,” I told her and she laughed.

“Has he made any progress on it?”

“I certainly hope so. He’s only been whining to me on the phone about it for the last six hours,” I told her and she raised an eyebrow. “I’m sure he’s almost done with it. He’s just a whiner.”

“Not Alex,” she answered and I laughed.

“Never,” I told her, rolling my eyes and taking out a pot to boil the noodles.

***

“Jack, there’s someone at the door!” May yelled, and I made an exasperated face.

“So get up and answer it! I’m busy!” I yelled back, hearing the timer go off to take the macaroni out of the oven.

“I’m changing Josie!”

“Have Zack answer the door!”

“He doesn’t live here!”

“Yes he fucking does!” I yelled back, putting the casserole dish on the stove quickly and shutting the oven off before walking into the living room. “Don’t worry. I got it. I’m only making your dinner and shit. Don’t feel compelled to get off your ass and open the fucking door or anything.”

“Stop being a cranky bitch, Jack,” May answered, fastening Josie’s onesie.

I rolled my eyes, opening the door and seeing Travis standing on the other side.

“Hey, Trav,” I said, leaning against the door.

“Can Alex come out and play?” he asked, pouting like a little kid and I laughed.

“I don’t care, he’s the one you’re gonna have to convince,” I told him, stepping aside and letting him follow me into the kitchen. “He’s been upstairs slaving over his final all day.”

“Well tell him I’m here to take him out in celebration of making it through our first year of college, and if he doesn’t come willingly I’ll drag his ass there kicking and screaming,” he told me and I chuckled.

“Alright, I’ll let him know,” I answered, moving to go up the stairs.

I opened our bedroom door, seeing Alex slumped over the desk and raising an eyebrow.

“Babe?” I asked, stepping closer to him and seeing his eyes closed and his mouth open wide. I chuckled, leaning down next to him and kissing his forehead. “Alex.”

He grunted in his sleep, turning his face away from me and almost knocking over the drink next to him.

“You’re gonna make a mess, Alexander,” I laughed, scooting the chair back. “Baby, wake up. Dinner’s ready.”

He didn’t respond, only tried to bury his face deeper into his arms.

I leaned over him, kissing his cheek and hearing him grunt, I kissed his other cheek, moving around to other parts of his face. He tried to wiggle away, but I moved his head, pulling him closer to my lips.

“Ja-ack!” he whined and I giggled, pressing our lips together lovingly as he glared grumpily at me. I swung my leg over his lap, straddling him and running my fingers through his blonde hair, noticing the brown roots beginning to poke through.

“You need to touch up your hair,” I told him and he pouted.

“You had to wake me up just to tell me that?” he questioned and I shook my head, smiling softly at him.

“No, I woke you up because the macaroni and cheese just finished cooking, and Travis is here to take you to a party,” I informed and he scrunched his nose.

“What party?

“A party to celebrate you surviving your freshman year, college boy,” I told him, toying with the hair at the back of his neck.

“I don’t want to go party,” he frowned and I raised an eyebrow.

“Well I want you to,” I told him. “You’ve been holed up in our room all day. You deserve to go out and have some fun, babe.”

“Eh,” he said, making a face and I shook my head.

“You’re going. Now come downstairs and eat,” I told him and he huffed.

“Are you coming out with me?” he asked and I shook my head.

“I worked overtime today, babe. I’m exhausted.”

“Oh so you can stay home and sleep but I can’t?”

“I have nothing to celebrate!”

“You can celebrate me,” he pouted and I rolled my eyes.

“I celebrate you everyday,” I teased, watching him make a face.

“Stop being a cheeseball,” he responded and I snorted.

“Shut the fuck up and come eat, dickhole,” I told him, getting off his lap and hearing him laugh.

****

“Are you sure you can’t come?” Alex asked, pouting as he pulled a clean t-shirt over his head.

“Yeah, babe. I’m gonna chill here and play some videogames with Zack,” I told him, seeing him try to jut his lip out even more to change my mind. “You’re gonna have fun. Stop giving me that look.”

“I’d have more fun if you were with me,” he answered and I laughed.

“Did you finish up your antibiotics?” I asked, running my thumb along the outline of his scruffy jaw.

“Yes, mom,” he responded, making me smirk.

“How’s your mouth feeling?”

“A lot better. Like, a lot,” he told me and I nodded.

“I’m glad,” I answered, leaning forward and brushing our lips together gently. “Just promise me you won’t drink, yeah? I don’t wanna take the chance of it fucking around with your medicine.”

“I won’t,” he answered. “I’m not even feeling this whole partying thing right now. I’ll probably be home by one.”

“Whatever. It won’t hurt my feelings if you stay out late,” I told him, tugging him out the door.
