Honestly, Serena wasn't even sure what she was supposed to say. The days since Jenny's birthday had been nice, peaceful, though that was pretty much par for the course around here anyway. As it turned out, sixteen didn't feel much different than fifteen did, but she was content enough either way. Stretched out on the beach as she often spent her afternoons, the sound of Serena's voice took her by surprise, but she smiled, turning to face the other girl.

"Hey, Serena," she said warmly, then lifted her shoulders in a shrug. "It's pretty good. How about you? What's up?"

"Uh, nothing much," Serena said, hands tapping against her hips as she nodded. "I'm good. Mind if I join you for a bit?" It was all in figuring out how to broach the topic to begin with, something Serena wasn't so good at. Leave it long enough, she knew, and she'd wind up simply blurting it out, which wasn't optimal.

"Sure," Jenny said brightly, smiling up at Serena as she gestured to the sand beside her. "Go right ahead." If anything was wrong, she couldn't spot it, nor would she have been able to guess what it was if she could. It wasn't like she had reason to suspect that Serena was looking for anything more than company.

Sliding down to sit beside Jenny, Serena drew her knees up toward her, leaning forward against them. Dragging her fingers through the sand, she ran her tongue over the back of her teeth, fumbling for an opener. "So I was hoping I could talk to you," she said, hovering a bit over the last syllable, sucking in a breath, "about Jason. How exactly are things between you two anyway?"
