Found the mental and physical energy to deal with my problems logging into and staying logged into Livejournal. Lj tech support sent me an email telling me it was my ISP. Called ISP just now and they had me unplugging things. Then they insisted that I plug satellite modem into wall instead of power/surge protector bar. That sorted the problem.

Hugs. How weird that the IT was saying it was a surge protector...

I know. But she said I had '18' (17 is bad) when it was in the surge protector shared with the router and printer, but 1.9 when it was on it's own in the wall plug. Not sure what the numbers mean.

The only thing I can think of here is noise level and the surge protector was inducing a hum.

I have invested in a new surge protector. Will have to get at least one more. Other one was over 15 years old. Who knew they had to be replaced?

It's odd that the surge protector would do that. But maybe it is noise as you say

The surge protector was old, maybe 15 years. Bought a new surge bar with more spots to run wires through to protect from surges.

The surge bar is maybe 15 years old. I have bought a new one and will toss the other. Who knew?
