Snake oil and New Years Resolutions

As many of you know, I took drastic action to deal with my obesity in June 2010. I am doing well, down over 60lbs, free of my high bp and life threatening GERD. lookfar posted a link re the near impossibility of losing weight and keeping it off by dieting that I'm signalboosting. Dieting doesn't work for 95% of people. So before you set yourself up for ( Read more... )

I find it interesting that when I was at the point of thinking "maybe surgery" I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. The hypoglycemia basically forced me into the eating habits you have named. Protein is my friend. Never again will I reach for a bag of chips to satisfy hunger pangs, instead I chew a piece of jerky, eat a hand full of nuts or a string cheese. I am happier, healthier and have lost almost 200 lbs in the last 8 years... only 50 to go!

Cheers!

Good for you. You are probably in that 5%. Most people would seriously question any medical treatment that had a 95% failure rate.

Well I did not go into it trying to "diet" more over I was trying to save my own life and prevent the probability of Type 2 Diabetes. When I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia my blood sugar was a dangerous 32 I had passed out and fallen down a flight of steps. The modification in eating habits was not a desire so much to lose weight as to get healthy. I think this made a world of difference. My consequences in not following through were not staying obese they were much more life threatening. It was not a desire to change my ways, but a necessity. I think the different perspective had much to do with my success. Personally I believe losing weight is both physical and mental.

i've found that only when the body is properly nourished on a diet that the cravings for sweet/fatty things go away.

I remember the day you posted about your decision to have the surgery. I thought you'd made a sound decision at the time, and time has proved you right.

Thanks! Reading fat acceptance and HAES blogs has helped me be so much more sane and self-accepting about this thing. I wish everyone who is now taking out his credit card to sign up for Weight Watchers (heavily advertised on the ball-drop program last night) would stop and think about what happened the last time they did this, and the time before, and wonder why this time is supposed to be different.

I guess I used to be in the 5% - I lost weight in my early 20s and kept it off till my late 30s - but in the last decade a series of medical issues have led to renewed weight issues. So I don't believe surgery is the ONLY option, but it is certainly a valid one and I am beyond pleased that it has worked so well for you.
