Today I had an experince with a local cab company that got me to think about what things help me decided whether I tip or not for a service. So for all you cab drivers, restaurant servers and food delivery persons who earn most of their income via tips, please listen up.
Tipping Cab Drivers: I tip when: the driver picks me up quickly, meaning 5-15 minutes, after I order a cab.; He/She helps me load or unload the trunk with my shopping items.; He/She doen't mind making multiple stops while going from one place to another.
Tips For Restaurant Servers: I tip when: You ask me how many kids menues I need without my kids hearing the question.; Being understanding that my wife and I need time to settle our kids down, helping them select their food and finally choosing our own meals.; Getting drinks and appetitizers quickly to the table.; Coming by the table often enough to refill drinks and get anything we need, but not so often that I think you are part of my party.; Automatically double the number of napkins normally given out. (Trust me, we will need them.); Don't talk to my kids unless you ask me first.; Confirm my kids order with me or my wife before writing it down.; Don't give my son or me a "You got to be nuts!!" look when he wants a meal without french fries.; Be polite, but don't flirt with my wife, me or my oldest daughter.; And lastly, have my check ready with take-home boxes within 45 minutes that I order our meals. (We eat fast, and my wife likes to get out quickly.)
Tips For Food Delivery Persons: I tip when: You have my order completely with you on your first trip to my townhouse.; You can make change and/or handle large orders. (I spend about $50-$75 on food delivery meals.); If my kids answer the door, ask for me nor give them any part of my order unless I say so.; Call me in you need directions to my townhouse. That is why I give your firm my phone number.
Re-reading this, I think I appear pretty harsh on tip earners. Trust me, I feel for you guys and gals. I have worked in the food industry for about 15 years, so I know how tough it is. I generally tip well and even budget accordingly to pay a tip when I call a cab, go out to eat or get food delivered. I try my best not to be a difficult customer, and 99% of the time I get good service here in Tucson.
