How To Get Your Tip From Me.

May 19, 2007 20:17

Today I had an experince with a local cab company that got me to think about what things help me decided whether I tip or not for a service. So for all you cab drivers, restaurant servers and food delivery persons who earn most of their income via tips, please listen up ( Read more... )

I do think some of your expectations for restaurant servers are a bit unrealistic. Drinks I understand need to be filled quickly, but everything else needs to be taken into effect ( ... )

No kidding. Don't talk to your children--guests of the restaurant--without asking your permission? Is this because they're not paying? Or is it some sort of backwards stranger-danger lesson you're teaching them?

I understand that I am not the only table a waiter/waitress has. But trust me, getting at least my drinks to the table will save him/her a lot of grief from my kids. When it comes to the regular meals, I know there is a wait, and my kids have learned that too. I have tried to keep them busy by letting them bring their ipods or gameboys to kill time ( ... )

If I had psychic abilities, I wouldn't be relying on tips for income.
If you want your kids to learn certain behaviors, that's your job. My job is to serve your food, drinks, etc. and be polite and friendly to you (and your kids--sorry!) while I do so. If you don't like the way your kids interact with people, teach them differently, or don't take them out. Don't blame the hard-working server who's just trying to be nice.

After reading this I am glad I no longer work in the service industry. Ask your permission to talk to your kids? You seem to have some serious control issues, and it doesn't seem very effective if you have to resort to ipods and gameboys to keep them occupied.

My prerequisites for a good tip include being friendly and appearing to work hard.

OP, it's called 'parenting'- you should try it sometime!

I think most of your requests fall within what most of us would expect our of good service. As long as people are friendly and, in the case of restaurants, check to see if I need anything every so often, I am happy with the service ( ... )

I agree with you. dreamedillusion May 20 2007, 17:49:01 UTC
Communicating clearly and effectively, not to mention, respectfully, with cab drivers, wait staff, and people taking phone orders, is usually the way to get good service.
(Though sometimes things do go wrong. I ordered a soda and sandwich once, and didn't see it for two hours. The delivery person actually showed up to the house, noticed he forgot the soda, and drove away, never even leaving his vehicle. I'd rather have my food on time sans bev., than a comped meal, two hours late.)
