Sometimes I really am proud of myself

Through it all it's amazing to me what I am capable of and how I handle situations. Tonight at about 4am I get back to the house after a night of shooting at various Atlanta nightclubs. I'm not in the house for very long when surprisingly there's a knock at the door. There standing is this woman who is incredibly old, freezing (as it's 34 degrees outside), and walking with a cane. My very first thought is hmm someone off the street, but something told me to go ahead and talk to her anyway. Well she didn't hardly speak any english at all. Turns out she's fillipino. But I persist and attempt to figure out what she wanted. I finally deduce that she possibly lived down the street. So I ask her if she would like me to walk her down the street. Asking questions just brought on a very weak voiced, very low enunciated set of words which I couldn't understand. I notice that she's got diamond earrings, a diamond ring, her clothes look fairly new and clean, her hair is well kempt, socks and slippers look new and not very worn. Otherwise things jsut didn't add up in my head. So I get dressed and start walking her down the street. She can barely walk even with her cane. She keeps trying to say things to me and I don't get very much. I attempt to ask her questions and get that's she 94, something about her daughter went to college, and she asked how long I've lived here. We walk about 15 houses down and there in the driveway is a car with the trunk open. Seemed a bit odd. And she points to the house and asks me to help. Now I wasn't sure at this point if she wanted me to go wake up the people in the house and see if they knew anything or if she lived there. So at this point I call the police and tell them the situation. I tell them I really don't think she lives on the street and give my indications why. Either way at her age she should be out in the cold walking around in slippers. The officers show up and place her in the back of the car so she can warm up. They knock on the door and eventually after several attempts wake the occupants.

It turns out yes these people knew her. It was an older couple perhaps in there 60's. The 94 year old lady was the mother of the wife that lived in the house. The older lady apparently had a stroke a week ago and now has been doing odd things. Seems she must have left the house and tried to get something out of the trunk of the car but had locked herself out of the house. The couple was asleep so they didn't even realize she had left. I guess she had wandered down the street trying to find help which at 4am is pretty scarce. She must have happened to see me go into the house or just happened to try our house and I was awake since I just recently got home.

So, She's home now and I guess I've met some neighbors. But the thing that really sort of makes me proud is the fact I really pursued figuring out what was wrong and got my neighbor's mother home safe. And I looked up and so of told God "Hey, glad I can help. Good to know that when you put the test infront of me I did ok." It reminds me how much faith I really do have in humanity and the general good of people. I can be a royal shithead sometimes but when it comes down to it I'd like to think overall I tip the scale on the brighter side of good. I just hope if ever faced with this situation that you all do the same as I, as perhaps some day in the future that could be my mother out in the cold at 4am.
