To Shin, no one defined the concept of ‘contrast’ quite like Aoi.
No one else was able to change so quickly and swiftly, smoothly creating images and breaking them within seconds. No one else was able to look one way and act so different, and no one else was so complex, with so many different sides that had him guessing all the time.
Standing in the wing of the stage, Shin found himself transfixed in the person Aoi had become. He moved his hips in a way that made him blush, threw his long hair about in a way that made him vaguely wary of the sore-neck complaints that were to hound him tomorrow, and danced his fingers along the neck of the guitar in a way that made him achingly proud.
He made Shin want to rewind this moment over and over, watch all the ways his face changed as he alternated between concentrating fiercely and letting go, the music taking him somewhere above the crowd, another place entirely. And Shin knew the feeling. He knew what the feeling of having a guitar beneath one's fingers could do, and he saw that feeling as Aoi closed his eyes and tilted his head back, body swaying to the music his band was creating.
Yet even though Shin felt such a wild mix of emotions as he watched Aoi play his music and perform for the crowd, he found himself anxious for the end. He wanted to see the instant when the Aoi that the fans and the stage knew stepped aside the one that he knew.
He held his breath as Aoi tossed his head back for the last note, and bit his lip in anticipation.
Ruki nodded his head in greeting as he stumbled past, and Shin returned the gesture awkwardly, pushing his hands into his pockets as he shuffled to the side to let the rest of the band through. Uruha smiled at him and ruffled his hair, Kai somehow found the strength to lift his hand in a vague semblance of greeting and thanks, and Reita paused a moment, seemingly about to ask Shin something before glancing back to the stage, shaking his head and patting his shoulder on the way past.
Shin spared each friend half a second’s glance, not wanting to miss what he came here to see.
Aoi threw his arms up to the crowd once more, cocky stage smile in place as he drank in the attention, before he turned his back on them, walking off stage.
And there it was.
Aoi’s smile grew in intensity and sincerity the second he spotted Shin in the shadows, his steps quickening. His whole aura changed from strong and confident to somewhat dorky and curious. Shin felt his lips stretching into a smile as Aoi came bounding up to him, throwing his arms around his waist and lifting him off his feet.
How he found the strength, Shin had no idea. He supposed he was just lucky he was so light.
Aoi grinned up at him, eyes alive with the high that only being on stage could bring, and Shin looked down to return the gesture, crying out in surprise as he was spun in a circle.
Aoi laughed as Shin wrapped his legs tightly around his waist in fear, and ignored him as he shouted, “Put me down!”
Well, at least he stopped spinning.
“You didn’t tell me you were coming,” Aoi smiled, not relinquishing his hold on Shin’s waist.
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” Shin blushed, linking his hands together as his arms went around Aoi’s neck for support.
Aoi’s grin only widened. “Aaw, aren’t you cute.”
Shin narrowed his eyes, jerking his head back when Aoi leaned in for a quick kiss. “I’ve told you -“
“I know, I know,” Aoi sighed, trying to replace the smile with a pout but failing miserably. “So, what did you think?” he asked excitedly. “Did I make you proud with my sheer degree of awesome?”
Shin wanted to tell him exactly what he felt when he’d watched him play, wished the words existed to describe how he made him feel, but only managed, “You’re very energetic for a thirty year old.”
Aoi rolled his eyes and wrinkled his nose, “We can’t all be old men like you, you know.”
Shin huffed in response, tugging on Aoi’s hair as he said, “And as much as this ‘old man’ loves you, you stink and you’re sweaty, and I would greatly appreciate being put down now.”
Aoi’s smile shifted to a smirk as he raised one amused eyebrow, and Shin bit his lip at the shift from an over-excited teenager to what he could only describe as sexy.
“You have to unwrap yourself, first.”
Shin blushed, hurriedly releasing his legs from around Aoi’s waist. Safely back on the ground, neither of them moved their arms from around each other despite Shin’s previous complaint, and Aoi’s eyes softened.
“I’m glad you came,” he smiled.
Shin nodded, thankful he’d taken a break and made the surprise visit as well, though for reasons entirely different,
The second time Aoi leaned in for a kiss, Shin didn’t shy away, and smiled into it as Aoi revealed another contrast to him.
Despite the excitement and energy running through his body, Aoi was always gentle. He could be positively fuming about something, but he was always gentle with Shin, as if he was afraid of breaking him.
It was a simple kiss, Aoi acknowledging Shin’s shyness about public affection, but Shin still got lost in it, loving the feel of Aoi’s hard body under his hands, but the gentleness with which it was pressed against his. The strong hands that so easily lifted him off his feet before now holding him gently. And he couldn’t help but wonder what Aoi’s lip ring would’ve felt like in contrast to the smooth skin of his lips.
“When you two can bear to separate for more than five seconds, the rest of us would like to see you, Aoi. Shin, you’re more than welcome to join, too.”
They broke apart instantly at the vaguely amused voice from behind them. Shin tried to detach himself from Aoi entirely, but instead braved the smell and buried his head in his lover’s chest when he was only held tighter.
“Aaw, now look what you’ve done, Rei.” Aoi’s voice reverberated through his chest, and Shin sunk into it further. “He’s gone all shy.”
“Wow, who would’ve thought?” Reita said jokingly, and Shin’s blush deepened. “Come on, we want to go home, and I’m sure you two do as well.”
Shin felt and heard Aoi say, “Yeah, yeah, two seconds,” and lifted his head when he was certain he’d heard the door close.
Aoi grinned down at him and combed his hair back gently. “He’s just jealous because a certain bassist hasn’t asked him out yet,” he said, nodding his head in the direction of the door Reita had just scolded them from.
Shin giggled quietly, stepping out of Aoi’s arms and giving him a light push. “Go on, you need to be with your band. I’ll wait out the back.”
Aoi shifted from foot to foot. “You promise?”
Shin nodded, nudging him again with a smile.
Aoi made it as far as putting his hand on the doorknob before he suddenly changed direction, running straight back into Shin and throwing his arms around him.
Shin’s eyebrows rose comically high as he was kissed once more before Aoi pulled back and said in embarrassment, “Sorry. Had to do it.”
Shin rolled his eyes and pushed him away, commanding, “Go.”
Aoi sighed, finally looking like someone who’d just played an intense live, and shuffled over to the door again, this time disappearing behind it.
Shin smiled behind his hand as he began to make his way down the hall that would take him to the stairs leading out of the building.
No, no one could ever do ‘contrast’ quite like Aoi.

Note: “Did I make you proud with my sheer degree of awesome?” - we all know Aoi loves himself, haha >.<
Second one done and done. XD Woo!
I've been on a roll lately... should be more soon! And none of my Aoi/Shin stories will be in order, but most likely they will all be about the same relationship/make references to the same pairings/people.
I may do another one about Aoi watching Shin. Who knows?
