I absolutely would NOT do a cruise for even two weeks let alone 9 months! Me, my Dad and my aunty Margaret went to Jordan and Egypt for two weeks a good few years ago, and the Egypt week was on one of those river cruises with most of the same people who'd irritated us somewhat on the first week when we were travelling round in a coach and staying in hotels. Stuck on the boat with them was a kind of torture. And that was only a week. 😂

the nine month cruise might have had more people on it than the river cruise (and can i just say, a river cruise in egypt? i am GREEN WITH JEALOUSY) (also i want to go to jordan but really so i can see petra) but still, what if you don't like anyone? or they don't like you? or they're fine at first and then just annoying? even people you like can annoy the hell out of you after being in close quarters for so long. and you can't get away from them because you're all stuck on a ship.

Even people you like can annoy the hell out of you after a while - so much yes. It was funny at theParis convention someone mentioned to Jensen about Creation's plans for a SPN cruise and he was SO not into it, he was delighted when everyone in the room said it was a terrible idea. I get the feeling he will not be booking up for that one if he can find a out in his contract LOL.

Re: Egypt - if you do get a chance to go, don't do it by cruising, it's SO frustrating. Apart from the whole stuck on the boat with people, the sightseeing excursions all revolve around the boat too - mostly for food reasons. So you dock somewhere, go through all the moored boats to get to shore, get taken to whichever site it is you're visiting that day and then are told you have a set time before you have to be back on the damn boat for dinner/lunch/supper. Plus boats are relatively slow, so you do spend 70% of your time travelling between places rather than actually seeing stuff.

I found Egypt itself disappointing. I'd wanted to go since I was a kid, and ( ... )

Nope. I enjoyed a week but not able to see my family for 9 months is a hard no.

that's how i feel too! it's a long time to not be able to see anyone. they'd have to travel to wherever the ship was stopping and meet you there and even then you wouldn't get a lot of time with them.

I find even the concept of cruises awful! Stuck on a floating shopping mall with all the same kind of food and entertainment options of a shopping mall - hideous! But I can definitely see the appeal for a certain type of traveler.

There are a lot of moderately wealthy people who quite happily go out to eat multiple times a week, invariably eating the same kind of middle-of-the-road stuff, going to bars that play mainstream music, watching blockbuster movies as they come out, hiring a maid to clean the house, a gardener to tend the lawn... now imagine you can keep that same lifestyle going but as a bonus you also get to do brief day trips to all kinds of exotic destinations on top of it. What's not to like? Young adult who wants to take a sabbatical/gap year, retirees looking to check a bunch of destinations off their bucket list... Many people only see their family once a year anyway so leave one year and come back in time for the holiday season next year? Makes total sense to me. The only folks it'd really be inconvenient for are ( ... )

i've been on two cruises in my life and neither was awful (i mean, on the second one i had shrimp cocktail with almost every dinner and that was very exciting) (sometimes i'm very easy) but i get seasick and there's a limited amount of stuff i want to do on a floating hotel while it's actually floating. and while i'd love to go to mars i'd have to get off the ship at some point. at least on a cruise you can go ashore. altho... mars. that would be pretty fantastic.

i dunno. nine months is a long time! but also i'm used to seeing my sister every weekend and my mom like three times a year so having to put off visiting for that long might be a problem.

during the age of sail people probably expected their trips to take longer. but yeah, i don't doubt a lot of them were just trying to make a very wet buck and they thought the months and years were worth it.

There was just a great post about cruises on ONTD:

It's worth reading the comments, the OP links to a bunch of videos from people who have lived on cruise ships for years at a time! So interesting.

oh my god that was wild. (and apparently the ship actually left northern ireland! and is in europe! someone linked the ship tracker and i had to check it out.) those people who sold everything to get a cabin on the first cruise, watched it go bankrupt, and then sold everything else for a cabin on the second cruise - what is wrong with them? you lose your money on one three year cruise so you sign up for another one? that's insane. also i cannot imagine living with my partner in such close quarters for any longer than a week, and even that's pushing it.
