OH MIMEOGRAPH!!! are some of the zines mimeograph???? My mom was a schoolteacher.... I loved that freaking machine whomping off smelly purple copies. :D. I wonder how many zines were carbon copies? One of my favorite things about the novel Dracula is that Mina Harker was a modern secretary who could take shorthand and then type up their Vampire findings in triplicate. :P
The black room is pretty cool. I like visiting commercial caverns (like the Winchester brothers, we love to take road trips and visit Giant Balls of Twine and whatnot.) Caverns are fun, they always turn out the lights on you for a minute so you just feel this heavy completely dark silence. then you see people's watches. :P Mostly you experience the smell of the earth in the cavern and the echoing drippy noises of most caverns. And the coolness of the constant 52 degrees. I wonder if it is quiet at all in his black room..... and I bet it smells overwhelmingly like paint!! :P
a lot of the zines probably are mimeographed, because how else would you copy them? you might be able to do carbon copies of just the typed stuff, but if your zine has illustrations, i bet that's a pain to reproduce with carbon paper. some of them have color covers and some color interiors, which makes me wonder if they were printed-printed, and how they were produced and bound. it's so weird to think about how people ran off copies of things in the days before xerox machines.
hee! for mina harker and her triplicate forms. historical technology is so fun.
the black room is terrifying! caves are different - you can reasonably assume a dark cave will drip, and it will be kind of cool temperature-wise, and even if all the overhead lights are off, whatever light there is (from phones or watches or whatever) will bounce off something. light in the black room has NO REFLECTION. it's like a vampire room. i bet it did smell like paint, tho.
