How do you think compulsory voting would go in America? Or would people just ignore it. Admittedly your how election process is a lot different to ours. I have everything crossed that 45 is voted out...I know Biden isn't everyone's first choice but surely he's better (and I should probably not comment too much as a non-American).

Fun fact (or not): my birthday is the same day as Dolly Parton's.

people would bitch about their freedoms being abridged if voting was compulsory. i mean, it would be the freedom to bow out of participating in government, but still. they'd probably also make a big deal out of NOT voting. there's a really wide streak of "you can't tell me what to do" in a lot of my fellow countrymen, even when what they're being told is demonstrably in their best interest.

Yeah, I kinda figured that when I commented. I just Googled out of curiosity to see how many countries in the world have compulsory voting, and the all-knowing Wikipedia says 21 countries have compulsory voting but not all enforce it.

We may get fined if we don't vote but it's not very much (I think only about $20 for a first offence) so I know some people would probably prefer to just pay $20 than vote...

The Obama administration gave Americans compulsory healthcare and it was immediately challenged in court because some Americans claimed it infringed on their "freedom" to choose to not have healthcare. As soon as Republicans got into power they passed a bill reducing the tax penalty for not having healthcare to $0, and one of their reasons for trying to stack the Supreme Court with ultra-conservative justices is exactly to overturn this on constitutional grounds. Sadly, this small but very loud and powerful group would certainly pull the same thing if voting were compulsory, since they know that the more people turn out to vote, the more likely they will be voted out.

trust the french to give us the good food. :D

apparently the percentage of people voting early - either at the polls or by mail - is up from 2016. i expect shenanigans because republicans can't be trusted, but so far i'm encouraged by my fellow voters.
