tonight is town fireworks night (it was supposed to be last week but it was canceled on account of rain) and right now the band is playing literally across the street from my house. the band is called booty vortex. they're cheesy as hell - a lot of 70s disco - but some of the audience is dancing, so. there might be a local military band later, ( Read more... )

Tallis? Really? I’m old. And apparently a lot more conservative than I thought. But that freaks me out.

that there was a woman wearing one out in public? i think that's the first time i've seen anyone wearing a tallis outside a temple/synagogue, but honestly i thought it was cool. i felt like she was representing her people in a very positive, pro-immigration reform kinda way. plus it was just a pretty tallis.

but if it's hotter than you're used to, it's still hot. especially if you don't have a/c.

No aircon - except in some shops. I admit to lingering in M&S food hall because it was so chilled! Otherwise it's a matter of opening all the windows and drawing the curtains.

Do you make your own pie crust? I can bake, but good pie crust eludes me. Do you use Crisco or lard? I've tried all the methods, I think, but if you have a secret please tell me!

Frog an Toad were books I really liked!I read them to my boys. Lobel's story sounds rather sad, I didn't know anything about him.

The beach sounds lovely!

i'm actually afraid of crust, which is stupid, but i figure i can buy a reliable crust much easier than i can bake one. plus which, i'm lazy as hell and making a crust is work. i've read that a little vodka in the dough helps make it flaky - the alcohol and i guess the taste bakes right out - but i've never tried it so i don't know if that's true.

i didn't either! but now i do. i just wish it wasn't that sad.

i'm not even a beach person but the beach was sooooo nice.

i baked in the awful heat! because i realllllly wanted to make a pie. but i also wanted to make snickerdoodles on tuesday, to eat on the fourth, but it was waaaay too hot. i guess i'm only good for one dumb baking experience per heat wave.
