tonight is town fireworks night (it was supposed to be last week but it was canceled on account of rain) and right now the band is playing literally across the street from my house. the band is called booty vortex. they're cheesy as hell - a lot of 70s disco - but some of the audience is dancing, so. there might be a local military band later, and i'm 99.44% sure someone is going to play the imperial march from star wars.
yesterday for the fourth i went to the beach with
tamalinn and her friend rachel-who-i-keep-wanting-to-call-heather. it was public transportation accessible! so no one had to pay for parking! and it wasn't as crowded as we were expecting! and there was a lovely breeze! and it was such a nice day! and because i'm an idiot who never uses sunscreen, my back is a bit red. oops. we sat around and went in the ocean (which was COLD) and people-watched and ate our snacks (oreos, cheese puffs, cherries, popcorn) and drank water like it was going extinct. and eventually we came home. tamalinn rescued her dog from being terrified by firework noise, and rachel-whose-name-really-isn't-heather and i went out for dinner. and i totally missed the big boston fireworks. which is why i'm patiently waiting for the fireworks across the street and suffering the total strangers sitting on my front steps.
well, that and the fried dough. :D eventually i'll be hungry enough to get some. so good and so bad for you.
tuesday i got out of work early (woot) and monday i lost my security badge. >.< between two-fifteen, when i needed it to get into the file room, and about five, when i needed it to get back into the office from the ladies' room, it grew little feet and walked off. i have a new one, but how weird! the old one vanished.
saturday i went to the immigration rally in boston with rachel-who-isn't-a-heather. you couldn't hear or even see the speakers unless you were right in front of them, so we mostly stood around in the awful heat and admired the signs and the wide variety of ages of protestors (old folks, middle-aged folks, parents with small children, etc) and eventually took refuge under a tree. there were a bunch of people from various organizations or supporting various elected hopefuls (the state primary is in september), which was really cool, and there were a few clearly religious folks - some people who had come with their faith congregation, but some clergy - i saw a woman in a yarmulke and a tallis, which i thought marked her as clergy but not necessarily (a lot of women at my parents' old temple, which is reform, wear them), and a guy in a priest's collar and what looks like a tallis to me but is obviously christian - anyway there was a nice variety of protestors and signs. lots of anti-ice ones. then we marched, for reasons that escape me, to another rally spot, at which point rachel and i peeled off because we were hot and hungry and had to pee. i saw a little dog on the march who was wearing a sign that said "i *heart* due process (and treats)". it was very cute.
and saturday night, despite the ridiculous heat, i baked a pie. >.< blueberry. for
tamalinn's sunday potluck brunch. i had to take a very cold shower afterwards because i was DYING. pie was pretty good, tho. i thought it could've used more blueberries but i was apparently the only one. the potluck was fun. food was good and there was a lot of it, which is important.
if you read or had read to you any of arnold lobel's frog and toad books when you were wee (i still have frog and toad together) - or if you read them to your kids when they were wee -
this is a really lovely article about them. lovely and kind of sad, because lobel came out to his family in 1974 and died of aids-related complications in 1987, and frog and toad's relationship can be seen as a way for him to express in fiction what he couldn't quite express in real life.
claws continues to be totally nuts and you should all watch it, i'm behind on pose which is less nuts but you should also all watch it, i'm caught up on the 100 which is dark as hell and i don't know if i can recommend it any more, and i'm going to miss queen of the south tonight on account of fireworks and i'd recommend it except it's already in its third season and i don't think i'm the only person who has a hard time catching up on multiple seasons of a show. and that's my tv pimp for the night. :D
now it's fried dough o'clock. stay frosty, northern hemisphere friends. it's hot out.
