wednesday night tamalinn called and said she was on her way home from work, she'd had a day, did i want to meet her for nachos and beer? i did, yes. (well, nachos anyway.) so i put on my shoes, put on my coat, get in my car, and... drive over a nail. >.< a big one. which is still buried in my tire, no doubt plugging up a big hole. my tires aren't ( Read more... )

I watched Damnation, on your rec! I have to admit, i gave up after 3 or 4 episodes, though, because i felt like it was a bit too violent and not as political as i hoped.

I also gave up on Vikings last season because of the violence. It was always my "bleak show" - the one to watch when i just wanted to feel cold and lonely and transported - but for some reason i haven't been in the mood for it over the last year. Perhaps once i start working it'll scratch an itch?

I have been watching Happy, though. It slots into the hole that Banshee left behind - self-consciously over-the-top without going too far down the splatterhouse hole like Ash vs Evil Dead. I need to take it slow, though, because it is heavy.

I got into The Good Place while i was in Canada! I was stuck at my friend's house with an epic hangover and she said it was a great hangover show. She wasn't wrong - we marathoned both seasons.

I don't have any tips for you, unfortunately. Maybe Counterpart? It hasn't started yet, but the pilot is online and it really hooked me.

damnation continued to be violent but i think it got slightly more political. i love that you started watching it because i said so! even if it turned out to not be your thing. and vikings is as bloody and gory as ever, altho i think this week is the season finale so there's been an extra amount of blood&guts. maybe once you start working you'll need bleak tv again, but to be honest you could just rewatch happy! which really is dark. under all the weirdness and batshit, it's a grim show. but i have to watch it. have you seen last week's episode? can i just say, WTF??

i'm assuming your hangover passed before you were finished with the good place. :D

i've now seen the pilot of counterpart! partly because i just really like jk simmons, and partly because it sounded weird and interesting. and so far it's more interesting than weird, and i like it. good call!

Yeah, Counterpart is totally up my alley. I like that they have set it in the present day, but it feels more like a Cold War spy show because they can't depend on tech like satellites and the internet. I love that constant tension of not knowing what exactly is going on or who you can trust.

Another new show i watched over the weekend was Altered Carbon. I read the book years ago and never made it past the first one in the series because even back then i found it exhausting. The show is faithful to the book - very 80s throwback hard-boiled cyberpunk. All the men are violent assholes. All the women are either victims of sexual violence or violent assholes or (usually) both. It might be a tough watch if you take it too seriously, but if you see it more as something fun and kinetic like Sucker Punch it's worth it.

Ahhh i got stuck on Happy, i think i am on episode 4 and never got any further? Maybe i'll catch up over the weekend.

pea-lovers unite! pretty much any casserole can be improved with the addition of peas. also cold peas in salad. and with pasta. and shepherd's pie, natch.

it was several episodes before i cared about more than one particular character, but ymmv. there's still a lot to like about the show. definitely try it!

We just got new tires. Horrifyingly expensive. I live in terror that something terrible will happen. I' so sorry.

You definitely missed my whole health scare, which fortunately turned out okay. *sigh of relief*

I did not know you had a car! You generally talk about taking the bus or walking, so it didn't even occur to me. :D

i have a car! it's lime green and i love it even tho parts keep breaking! (now apparently one of the brake lights is out. which of course i can't see when i'm driving.) i named it eleanor. :D i take public transportation to work, tho, since i work in boston proper and i'm not rich enough to pay for city parking every day.
