We're in a cold snap here too, it's currently -15 (despite today's low supposedly being -10, thank you weatherperson). I am not a fan.

There are a lot of opinions about public transport. Musk's isn't surprising to me, disappointing, but not surprising.

HOLY SHIT THAT'S COLD. that's not right.

i guess you can't expect a guy who makes cars to be particularly interested in public transportation. but still, he said some dumb things.

I'd missed Elon Musk's statement about public transit. Without public transmit, most large cities are just unbearable. Boy, visiting DC last summer and taking the metro almost everywhere, plus walking and the occasional Uber, was so much nicer than having to deal with a rental car. Public transit in Portland gave me freedom as a kid, and made life so much easier on visits to London and Paris.

And single-driver systems, which Musk finds preferable? Part and parcel of California's horrible gridlock and air pollution problems. We joke at my office about people who leave for jobs in the Bay Area. The extra pay will get eaten up by increased housing costs (and then some!), and then there's the joy of practically living in your car when you're not at the office, because Bay Area traffic is awful.

Man, just because you make an electric car doesn't exempt you from the truth of the fact that cars are degrading the environment for us all, and public transit is one of the best ways to combat those side-effects.

so many cities would be unlivable without public transportation. can you imagine if everyone in new york needed a car to get anywhere? either their own or a cab/uber/lyft? i honestly know very little about elon musk, but ragging on public transportation and suggesting "individualized transport" for everyone makes him sound unsufferable and elitist and like he lives in a very special privileged little bubble.
