it's weird to watch world history being made

because i had nothing to do at work today i spent a lot of time on twitter reading about brexit. it's fascinating and scary, and i realize i'm lucky to be able to look at it as merely fascinating, because it doesn't directly affect me. it was a lot of news to read, tho. the one good part was that donald trump was in scotland and tweeted how ( Read more... )

Reporting live from inside the UK I have to say the predominant mood is anger & upset, rather than being scared. I've not met anybody who is actually pleased with the results, which is kinda weired, given that their must be people out there who actaully wanted to leave. But given how the mood is today, I don't think anybody dares to admit they voted for leaving. It's going to cause a lot of econimic and administrative chaose in the short-term and in the long-term will make certain things more complicated again (like working abroad).

I find it rather adorable that there are pro-Brexit politicians who are a) surprised that Cameron resigned and b) are saying they want him to negotiate the exit from the EU. Cameron clearly said leaving the EU is a horrible idea, so how could he then and make it happen? Even I assumed he was going to go, though maybe no on the day of the election result, but it makes total sense to me.

anger and upset might be better than scared, actually. and yeah, i bet there are a lot people who voted leave who don't want to say so. the ones who kill me are the people who voted leave as a protest vote, even tho they're actually remainers, because they didn't think their votes would really count. what did they think would happen, if they and everyone else they know voted leave in protest? a protest vote is still a legitimate vote.

did people honestly expect cameron to guide the uk through leaving, even tho he was so pro-remain? why did they think he would want to stay on as pm? does no one else want to step up and take control?

You know, I think it's one of those situations where the idea sounds much more appealing than the reality?

They probably should have had a third option on the ballot:

Leave unless Leave wins in which case I change my vote to Remain.

I liked the plum one, personally. I mean, it's an insult to all plums everywhere, but...who the hell comes up with such wonderful insults? (Incidentally, when my best friend gets cut off in traffic, she yells out the window "You smell like old fish!")

that was a good one too. but "spoon"! it's such an innocuous word, no doubt said with extreme vitriol.

i think at this point the best we can hope for is, like, a week of boring before it gets interesting again.
