What I just finished reading:
the nameless city vol 1, which i highly recommend especially if you have kids in your life who like graphic novels. one of my favorite things is the random people in the background - city residents, palace guards, kids, whoever. it makes the city feel very lived in.

What I am reading now:
damnificados, by jj amaworo ( Read more... )

badass women, historical nifty, new job second floor, cheese, wednesday reading meme, watership down, music

Re: Watership Down Remake - Whyyyy? It's animation, so there is no argument about remaking it with a 'more recognizable' cast. The artwork was so impressive (non of the generic, bigger-than life Disney stuff) and atmospheric. The whole thing was just perfect. Surely, there are more amazing stories out there that are just waiting to be made into a mini series???
(Sorry, I seem to be having one of those 'grumpy old lady' days ;P )

on the one hand, i totally agree with you. the original is distinctive and classic and yeah, since you can't actually see anyone it's not like they're remaking it with a current cast. except you can still hear all the actors. but you can't really rewrite or reinterpret it or you'll get a different story. i wonder if it's a passion project for someone at netflix or the bbc, and that's why they're remaking it. or someone realized there's a whole new generation of kids to traumatize.

If you would like me to, and when Passover is over and you can have it again, I'd be happy to help you find a chocolatier who's local to you and doesn't use corn syrup. I am lucky enough to live near a bunch of small production chocolatiers, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that they all know each other. They're like...confectionery librarians.

there actually is a chocolatier around here that doesn't use corn syrup - burdick's, they're in harvard square - they make the world's cutest chocolate penguins - and it's not like the chocolate i got is going to go bad before saturday night.

confectionery librarians, hee. i bet small-batch chocolate is a small world.

Oh, gods. WD defined my tween years.....in a way I still haven't fully explored. It changed me. I don't think I could ever watch any sort of adaptation.

did you never see the movie? i'm 99.44% sure i saw it in the theater, because it was animated and it was about rabbits and my mom would not have known to vet it beforehand for, you know, bloody bunny violence. (altho she did make me wait to see raiders of the lost ark when it came out. maybe live action blood and death is different from animated blood and death.) i didn't read the book until i was in high school, tho, and it didn't have nearly the effect on me that it sounds like it had on you.
