YAY THE MARTIAN!!!! Do you have plans to read the book? Because you MUST. It's like the movie to the nth degree. They're remarkably similar, the book just has MORE. More science, more character (though just barely - it really is about SCIENCE), and MORE SCIENCE! Also MORE CURSE WORDS! Seriously Watney is a potty mouth. It's marvelous ( ... )

this lj is a judgement-free zone when it comes to science nerdery. well, any kind of nerdery, really. nerd away! because seriously, knowing so much of the science was accurate made me so, so happy. you can have actual-fact science and still make a really compelling, interesting, tense movie. (and book, apparently. :D ) you don't need a lot of contrived fake movie science ( ... )

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

And that skateboarding story was so sweet. :)

you're most welcome! and isn't that the best story? one of my favorite parts is seriously that the boy was completely baffled by all the attention, because apparently he doesn't think that what he did was all that exceptional. i mean, OF COURSE the more experienced skateboarder is going to help the newbie. why wouldn't they? y'know? but for a little girl who thinks girls aren't allowed to skateboard - and for that little girl's mom - getting some unsolicited and very kind help from an older kid is a HUGE DEAL.

Ahhh, welcome back! Get allll the rest and sleep!

I don't know about the movie, but in the book Lewis was married and quite a bit older than Watney, which was probably why she didn't count. BUT this is where I'm going to stop bitching about that pathetic excuse for a book and just let you be happy about enjoying a movie :D

what is this "sleep" you speak of?

she's married in the movie too - eventually you see her video chatting with her husband, i think when the hermes decides to slingshot around earth and go back for watney, and she and martinez and vogel have to tell their families - but until that point, i kept expecting some ust. (i didn't get that she was supposed to be so much older, probably because the actress looks about the same age as matt damon.) but no! it was really nice. i do not however have much of a desire to read the book. i had enough time to kill in the airport before coming home that i found it in a bookstore and read the end (admittedly because i was told beck does the saving in the book), and the style just did not grab me. a lot of short sentences, some technical-speak, and a lot of "copy". i'm perfectly happy to enjoy the movie and not read the source material.
