It was a pretty amusing response :D Also, I'm still super excited for you.

I just started rereading World War Z, thinking that holy shit, that is one scary book. When I was little, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi scared me out of my wits. I mean, huge poisonous snakes with murderous intent! In the dark! And then there was that muskrat that always crept along the bedroom walls at night, terrified to run into the center because of what might be out there.

Would you say Headless Cupid might be scary to you as an adult? I read the description, and it didn't sound too bad, but then hey, some of the creepiest horror books have been known to disguise themselves as children's literature. (I'm feeling it for a creepy book!)

i love that my reaction was "HOW DID THAT EVEN HAPPEN??" and now "how cool is that!" >.<

i know rikki-rikki-tavi as an animated tv movie, but i don't remember it being super scary. possibly the book would've freaked me out, tho. i mean, murderous snakes, that's not very cuddly.

i like to think i could read the headless cupid all the way through now, but i haven't tried. for one thing, i'd have to buy it, because i have no idea what happened to the copy i had when i was a wee thing, and i'm just not up for buying something that freaked me so badly i couldn't finish it. but i would not discourage anyone else from trying! it's not a long book and zks is a good writer.

can guys wear suits that aren't black to black-tie events? or is their only option a tux?

Yes, but it depends on the type of suit. What are you thinking of?

it was mostly a fic research question, combined with me just being curious. i was thinking about non-wedding occasions, like swanky cultural events.

Then yes, absolutely, a suit would work. However, it depends on the invite. If the invite states "black tie required", then you show up in a tux, no questions (there are many different tux styles, however, so there's room for stylistic choices and fashion, if you're looking for someone to make an individualistic statement.) But if it's "black tie optional", then some type of bespoke suit (single-breast, tie, dark colors preferably) will be fine. A formal suit, if you will, not something you'd wear to the office.

Scariest book can be soooo dependent on age. When I was 13 I read "Salem's Lot" and was suitably frightened with one scene in particular staying with me....but then I read a short story out of "Pigeons from Hell" and still have not recovered. As an adult reader - Peter Straub's "Floating Dragon" which King stole and rewrote as "It" and King's "Pet Semetery" scared me to pieces. Now Imma look for "The Headless Cupid"....

i've only read two king books - eyes of the dragon and the dark tower - oh wait, and misery - but none of his really horror-ish stuff because i have a low tolerance for scary and like being able to sleep with the lights off. (i did however buy one of joe hill's short story collections knowing scary probably runs in the family, because i might be a glutton for punishment.) so i am somehow not surprised that that's what scared you.

the headless cupid is ya! i wasn't even reading above my age level! but i was SCARED SHITLESS. i liked zks' the egypt game, i just... couldn't handle the cupid.
