As a non-jewish German living abroad it always amazes me how little it bothers non-German Jews that I'm German. I can totally sympathizes with that Mum's sentiments and kind of would expect it, but it only very rarely happens. Though I've never fallen for a jewish guy, I am just talking about friendships or professional relationships. It's different in Germany, but with the jewish comunity there you know they made a deliberate choice to stay or return to Germany, and consider themselves both German and jewish. These are very complicated feelings, though.

i'm not actually surprised that non-german jews aren't particularly bothered about being friends and working with non-jewish germans. i mean, from what i understand, germany has taken responsibility for the holocaust and has made a effort at reparations (i remember going to israel when i was in high school and being so surprised that the taxis in jerusalem were all mercedes, because in the us, mercedes is a luxury brand and cabs tend to be cheaper american cars), and all the folks who have much more personal experiences with ww2 are dead or dying off. and a lot has changed in seventy years. it is kind of complicated, tho.
