a little squick, a little rambling

happy birthdays to ignipes and shivering-lance, fabulous writers both! also pretty cool people. allow me to offer wishes of pleasant days and cake and maybe a sparkler or two.

dancing boys and girls: *two-step*

and that. :D

there's a new perk for the wincon indiegogo campaign - namely, a book made by yours truly. for a $40 pledge you too can own one! look, i think it's pretty exciting, altho possibly i'm biased.

there's apparently a tsukinobara on tumblr who isn't me. i'm a little weirded out but at least she seems to be interested in other things than i am. (ie, there's a shocking lack of hot men and avengers and puns.)

today i wrote my lj idol entry at the little coffee place down the street, and it's about oskar and conrad again and someone has been blamed, and the guy sitting at the table next to me was reading albert speer's inside the third reich. coincidence! the story is about finding a commonality with people with whom you might not share a single other thing, and it's fiction, but it contains the seeds of two true stories:

(one) years and years ago i went to london and took a tour of the bevis marks synagogue, which is the oldest synagogue in britain. it was built by sephardic jews (spanish and probably some portuguese) in the very early eighteenth century, and i remember the little group of us who took the tour as being a few middle-aged ladies and me, all of us jewish. one of the women was from south africa and she had three kids, all of whom had moved out of the country, and one of her sons was dating a german girl. this woman was my parents' generation and "he's dating a german girl" was worse to her and the other women taking the tour than it was to me, but all the same, i knew exactly why it bothered her without her having to give any more details, and even tho i wouldn't have had the same problem with, say, my sister dating a german boy, i could totally sympathize. (and it was the fact that the girl was german, not that she wasn't jewish, that was the sticking point. she was apparently a nice girl, otherwise.) and i thought y'know, you can go anywhere in the world and meet another jew and it doesn't matter where they're from or even how old they are - you have this thing in common and it's like you know something about each other already.

(the south african woman wanted to emigrate - i don't think she felt entirely safe in south africa, plus all her kids had left - i think one of them was in seattle - but the rand wasn't worth anything and even tho she and her husband had a comfortable life there, that didn't mean they'd be able to afford a comfortable life anywhere else.)

(two) i used to know a guy, a nice jewish boy, whose dad had escaped romania as a teenager sometime during ww2, i think early in the war. (i don't remember if the nice jewish boy ever told me exactly when.) dad managed to get out partly by adopting a different last name, a fairly common non-denominationally romanian name to replace the recognizably jewish last name he was born with.

speaking of romanians, i caught part of a movie called gone on tv last night, starring amanda seyfried as an abduction survivor whose sister goes missing, and who then thinks that her sister was taken by the guy who took her. sebastian stan and his fucking face face played the sister's boyfriend. his hair was actually ok and the rest of him was of course very cute. i fell asleep partway through, tho, so i never found out if amanda seyfried found her sister, and if they were taken by the same guy, and who he was. (i suspected one of the cops.) it didn't seem as terrible as other sebstan movies i've seen. i mean, i wanted to watch it to the end.

i'm at least a whole day ahead on my nanonovel, go me. i managed almost 3600 words at work yesterday. i haven't written anything today, but the night is still young. (yes i know it's after ten, i plan to be awake another couple hours at least.)

who's watching hell on wheels? BOHANNON IS AMPUTATING SIDNEY SNOW'S LEG WITH A HACKSAW AND IT IS SO GRAPHIC I AM BESIDE MYSELF WITH SQUICK. SERIOUSLY. THE LEVEL OF SQUICK OUT HERE CANNOT BE MEASURED.

honestly, every single muscle in my body cringed so hard. just... eeuugh.

i think it's worse than the white bread and plastic wrap from the episode of criminal minds with alex o'loughlin, which was one of the most squickifying things i ever saw on tv that wasn't actual blood and guts.

there's a pantone hotel in brussels and each floor is decorated with a different palette of pantone colors. modernist and pretty.

for those of you who remember coin-operated arcade games (frogger! galaga! q*bert!), here's hundreds of them you can play on your browser for free. they look just as dated as you remember, but if you're feeling nostalgic....

a lovely and short web comic.

tumblr, ah nostalgia, oskar and conrad, wincon formerly winchestercon, video games, architectural nifty, psa, jewstuff, web comics, hell on wheels
