the things you learn from talking to strangers

on the t home tonight i had a short and interesting conversation with a transit cop about books (sort of) and, er, mobsters. he commented on my book - midnight riot, aka rivers of london, and does anyone know why the us edition has a different title? - he joked that it was just a short story, i'd finish it in no time, and i said that i read it ( Read more... )

boston, snow, stories someone else told me

Yeah, Scorsese used the Infernal Affairs template to make a film about Whitey. And Ben Affleck's next film (after the Lehane film - he's adapting & directing The Next Day) is the one he's directing about Whitey that Damon is supposed to star in & I really want that to happen sooner rather than later. *g*

the given day? EXCITEMENT. i'd kind of like the whitey bulger movie to happen sooner rather than later too, tho.

Yes, The Given Day, sorry. (It was late, I was too lazy to look at my bookshelf. *g*)

At least Ben's actually filming the FIRST book in this series. :)

That transit cop sounds very cool. I've no idea why Rivers of London was called Midnight Riot here, it's odd to make a change like that

i get why the us edition would have a different cover, but a whole different title? they didn't think rivers of london would sell as titled?

i'm enjoying it a lot! it's the kind of urban fantasy i like - weird and creepy and arcane and old and genuinely dangerous magical shit is happening just under the surface of normal life, rather than, like, everyone knows there are elves working at starbucks and werewolf mechanics and whatever else, or everybody doesn't know and the story centers on the tough kick-ass female demon hunter and her love interest. pfft. peter grant is like a normal dude! sort of. and he has a dog! sort of. and the thames is a middle-aged nigerian lady! sort of. i don't have any deep thoughts or anything, i just really like it.

he story centers on the tough kick-ass female demon hunter and her love interest

COUGH COUGH ANITA BLAKE COUGH.

I really, really enjoyed it too. Partly because it is very recognisibly and very NORMALLY London, and there are so many different people in it who feel like you already knew them. :)

>>COUGH COUGH ANITA BLAKE COUGH.<<

no, that would be "centers on the tough kick-ass self-insert/mary sue and her harem of fucktoys". ahem.

i have to say, i love that the london of midnight riot is so NORMAL, despite all the magic and weirdness.

You've got to love those random connections where you meet really interesting people and have the most riveting conversation for a few minutes and then never see each other again.
