So, I started to write a really long response to your question about the music business, but I don't want to spam your comments if I'm not answering the question I think I'm answering

definitely music business more than entertainment business. playing shows, getting your stuff heard, building a local fanbase, going on tour, that kind of thing. and fairly local music business at first. i'm not 100% sure what exact questions i should be asking, tho, since this is something i know absolutely nothing about, and i'm writing a character who basically shows up in nashville with a guitar and looks around and goes "ok, now what?" he's got a friend who's already in a band, which is why he goes to nashville and not, like, nyc or somewhere, and the band does go on tour, so that's actually something i will need to know more about, if don't mind telling me. :D

is it a safe bet that even working musicians in a band with a decent following might have to have other (possibly more steady) jobs on the side? or can you live off local shows and tours and album/singles sales? altho i guess that would be "album/mp3 sales"....

Well, I originally got an LJ so I could follow people and ditch an entire folder worth of bookmarks, so :D (Randomly, I did not realize how much I use my ring finger when I type until I wrapped a bandage around it, argh.)
