They probably keep John's phone charged so contacts that knew him but not them can reach them if there's a job that needs doing.

i'm not 100% sure why the title, tho.

Because adding a long-lost sekrit sibling/relative is a time-honored way for shows to jump the shark. Kripke was just getting there before fandom could.

oh, point. i wonder how often john's phone rings and it's some old contact or someone who hasn't talked to him in years and obviously had no idea he was dead.

it just seemed like kripke and the title of the episode were making a joke that the episode itself wasn't making. i mean, adam was introduced in all seriousness as john's kid, and i can't imagine the ptb are worried that the show's already jumped the shark. i was kind of expecting slightly more light-heartedness and wink-wink joking than we got.

so joe the deputy had some help from john the hunter. surprise. i wonder why joe became a bartender, tho.

I'd guess he retired. This happened 19 years ago, and if he was the sheriff back then it's entirely plausible he'd retired by now. Our department, officers can retire at 20 years in.

hands up everyone who's surprised by this turn of events. yeah, didn't think so. so maybe the thing john killed in 1990 was adam!thing's dad and, uh, what's his mom's name? her husband. and this whole thing was a giant trap after all. whatever adam and mom are, they're impervious to holy water and silver.I only didn't know if Adam had been killed sometime after the boys arrived. I was still thinking shapeshifter, and that the shifter had nabbed him after he'd had dinner with the boys, maybe after they left him at the house to deal with the police ( ... )

>>(does this mean it's now canon that John always forgot their birthdays? I've read a couple of fics like that!)<<

i read it as more that he just didn't do much or make a big deal out of it - maybe they got some presents, maybe a cake, but certainly never anything on the order of a baseball game. i'd totally accept that he forgot sometimes, or just got too caught up in a hunt or something, but i don't think he always forgot. and i think dean was also reacting to the fact that john treated adam like a son and not a soldier.

i kind of wondered when the ghoul would've snatched adam. are ghouls susceptible to silver or holy water? because that could've been ghoul!adam in the diner, even. makes more sense that it would've taken him after he'd met the boys the first time, tho.
