what became of them
Andrew picks the kid up just outside Boise, Idaho. He’s walking on the side of highway 84, a duffle slung over one shoulder, and his thumb out on his free hand. He has a sign tucked under one arm, the letters mostly obscured. When Andrew pulls his truck over, he can see that it says, Portland, written in large letters and then crossed out. Jesse seems happy to sleep in the cabin overnight when Andrew pulls over at 2AM for his four-hour break. They’re required, and with good reason.
“You’re sure you’ll be fine?” Andrew asks, pulling the keys out of the ignition and making as if to move back to his bed. He has a hob back there, too, in case he wants to make tea, and small fridge. Necessities of being on the road.
“I’ve slept in worse places, I promise you.” Jesse snorts, and Andrew has to keep from asking where? and why?. He’s not sure why he cares. Jesse seems too vulnerable to be living like this for as long as he says he has been ( ... )

“I don’t have - fuck,” Andrew says, and cuts himself off, shuddering, as Jesse runs a hand over his chest, thumbing at his nipple.
“There’s Vaseline in the glove compartment,” Jesse says, and then flushes across his cheeks, hot and red. “I looked, I just - I like maps.”
Andrew squeezes his eyes closed, fingernails digging into Jesse’s shoulder blades. Jesse is just looking at him, thumb idly swiping back and forth over Andrew’s nipple, holding Andrew firm and steady with his hips. Andrew was going to say, I don’t have a condom, but he can’t - it’s a terrible idea, but he’s not sure he gives a shit at this point ( ... )

Andrew drops Jesse off in front of a bus stop, and wants to kiss him again, but instead he just smiles, and tells him goodbye.
Later, when he’s just about to drop off his cargo at the lot, he finds Jesse’s copy of Leaves of Grass stuffed between the door and the passenger seat. He’s flipping through it, wondering how Jesse could have forgotten it, when his eyes catch on the inscription on the inside cover.
Andrew, it says, in small, scrawled letters.
