Too much anime

You know you watch too much anime when you are sitting in the library, four people speaking Japanese are sitting next to you, and you can understand some of what they are saying. I don't know exactly what they are saying, but I recognize words and phrases and my mind is automatically assigning meanings to them ( Read more... )

That sounds like an excellent solution! Or take your next trip to Japan, which sounds even better. Fresh pocky!

When I was taking a spanish class a couple years ago, I watched Firefly with the Spanish dub "to help me learn." (Have I told you this before I feel like I've said it before...)

Also, when I used to watch too much anime, I did absorb a lot of Japanese, much as you seem to have. Yesterday my Math professor said something about "one, uno, ichi" and I started counting in Japanese...

Hey, I learned Italian and German by watching anime!

Of course, I was a kid at the time, so it was infinitely easier to catch things then. They say the best ages to learn other languages is between one and ten/twelve. But now I wish I'd had seen said anime in the original Japanese, for obvious reasons... still, I catch on words and phrases - and phrasing! - too!

I hear you, and suffer from a similar problem. I took Spanish for 5 years. I've been watching anime in Japanese (with English subs) for, oh, 15 or 16 years. Which do you think I actually remember more of?

The worst part? I'll hear something in Spanish and my response pops up in my head in Japanese. Somewhere in my brain, Spanish is still hiding out. I catch more words per sentence in Japanese than I do in Spanish, and I think it's because of the sheer amount of time I have heard the language.
