DIY: Never as easy as promised

Dec 30, 2011 08:54

I should know better by now. Any time a DIY project is going smoothly, it's really just waiting for me to let down my guard before it somehow goes south. This one was no exception.

The Project: Put up a closet
Required skills: Measuring, leveling, using a screw driver, possibly installing drywall anchors
Est. Time: 1.5 hours

How could this possibly go wrong? )

whining, no just no, un-fucking-believable, diy

Normally with the anchors I drill a hole slightly smaller than the anchor. Then hammer that in place. It insures that it will be a tight fit and the anchor should not move. This also means the screw will be a tight fit and can hold what is needed. Having a drill also means a power screw driver to make things easier for you. You would just need the right bits for it. Using a hand screwdriver as you have seen can mess your hand up good. I only use one on light things. Stuff that doesn't need a super tight fit.

We actually used the drill to try and get the drywall anchors in both by using it to screw them in and by trying to make a hole just a bit smaller than the drywall anchors. No dice. What Miome eventually wound up doing was making a hole slightly bigger than the drywall anchors, filling it with spackle, shoving the drywall anchor into it, and then waiting for it to dry. It's held the shelves plut junk so far, so it seems to be working.

I hate it when things get argh. I'm glad you figured out something that is working so far.

I have to attempt to put my closet shelf and rail back up sometime soon... but hanging all the clothes from the bunk bed frame in the other room has been working so nicely I haven't been motivated. ^_^
