I don't have kids, but I watch my godson and am always a bit surprised by the little things he does and we don't realize, even if we're actually paying attention to it. Thankfully it's nothing bad.

I think your "you're staying out of trouble, doing well in school... whatever." is a good one. I think it makes them feel trusted. XD
