it's official: i'm oblivious.

it's official, i've given myself the Most Oblivious Mom of the Year for 2014.

so, backstory: last year (end of 2013, that is), a friend of mine was able to get a Dr Who box set with Nine's series and some of Ten's as well. after calculating prices, he figured out that it would cost less to get the box set than to get Ten's series separately, so he bought the box set. now he had an extra of Nine's series, so he gave it to me.

it sat on my table for a lonnnng time. finally, in July (this year) i said "alright, if i'm going to watch it, i want to start it from the beginning." and thanks to a friend on another forum who told me about a site i could watch it on, i set about watching it, starting with An Unearthly Child. last night i watched Tom Baker's first episode!! =)

as the summer turned into the school year, my younger daughter, M, would tell me about things her friend had told her that had happened in the series. on weekends, she would stay in bed in the mornings, "watching youtube." just this past month, M wanted to get things like the various sonic screwdrivers from the show, Dr Who earrings and such... she's talking about characters she loves, and episodes. just the other day, she got the jacket that Matt Smith wears on the show, and yet, i still figured she amassed her knowledge from her friend and memes and macros on facebook.

finally, last night, she asked me what i would say if she said the only episode she had left to watch was "Last Christmas"? i just simply said "really?" and then after some hard thinking, and trying to make the holes in my Swiss Cheese Memory™ close up so i could remember, it all suddenly made sense. she started watching Nine's DVD set back in April, but for some reason just never told me.

from time to time, i'd say "she's gotta be watching the show!" but she never confirmed it for me. and then this past saturday, friends came over, and both daughters were talking with Ben about all the episodes. (the older daughter has seen up to series 2, episode 9, i think...)

M told me there were even times when i would be over at my computer, watching an episode online, and she'd be over on the couch *in the same room* watching an episode on her tablet (she had headphones on, so i didn't hear what she was watching.)

it's also not like i said they couldn't watch it, since i started watching it as well. in fact, i do remember offering Nine's DVDs for them to watch. and it's not like i'm a hover mom - "whatcha watching??" "let me see your browser history so i can see what sites you've visited." i'm more like "you're staying out of trouble, doing well in school... whatever."

so yeah. Most Oblivious Mom of the Year for 2014. =)
