in Supernatural magazine issue #7 May/June '09 page 46.
Q: Are there any scenes from S3 that were lost due to the writers' strike that have found their way into S4?
EK: We Didn't have the time to tell the story about Sam's powers, and all that had to push insot s4. In the original versions we were thinking of before the strike, Sam was going to save Dean and in typical Supernatural fasion, it was going to cost the boys dearly. But because we didn't have the time to develop Sam's powers, there wasn't really anybody left to save Dean, so Dean had to go to Hell.
Q: Sam was actually going to save Dean?
EK: Yes, we were going to save Dean, maybe even before the season finale, but at the cost that Sam was now this fully operatonal dark force. Then Sam wants to make an assault on Lilith amd he's working on his powers, ant that's a big problem with Dean. So we get to ed up roughly in the same place we were going to end up anyway.Jeez that was alot to type. I would normally scan it ( ... )

Because of the strike, we never have learned why the people connected to Mary died. Did Eric say anything about that?

well... Yellow Eyes was trying to get everyone out of the way - he did that with Andy and Ansom in Simon Said. Ansom - as directed by Yellow Eyes - killed his birth mother, the doctor.... everyone connected with him. so - Yellow Eyes had them killed. at least, that's what i'm guessing?
