The artwork is absolutely, utterly stunning - mementis's work is wonderful. I don't have enough adjectives for it! And I'm so very, very glad you liked it - thank you for mentioning!

Historical AUs set in this particular era aren't usually my thing, but I couldn't pass this up -- your stories have a knack for making me love things I never thought I'd even like, so I was confident you'd blow me away with this one. Unsurprisingly, I WAS blown away, and I'm still reeling, so forgive me if this is a little disjointed.

I don't know what's so particularly attractive about the idea of Sam as a journalist for a cheap tabloid, but I have to say it's got a real appeal to it. The picture you paint of his newsroom life rings pretty true to my own limited experience in journalism (some things haven't changed too much) and really manages to add some gritty reality to contrast how Sam keeps getting haunted by his memories. It's easy to get a real feel for how much Dean is still there for Sam, and it's even easier to get caught up in his search-- first for a story, then something more. The way the narrative unspools is fantastic, and the transition from practical and grounded to the surreality of Paradise feels a lot like ( ... )

mythicbeast, thank *you* for this small essay of a comment! I can't tell you how much I appreciated the time you took to read, and write, and let me know what you thought about this story - I'm truly touched and grateful. Thank you so much.

I'm so glad to know that it worked for you - especially the minor characters. And it's lovely to know you liked Felicia and Mame. I'm really fond of this Filipino couple! There's an essay - I could have sworn it was in Samois' second book of essays, Second Coming, but it's not, I've just checked, and it's not in the first, Coming to Power either - anyway, an excellent and unforgettable essay about Filipino lesbian culture in the 50s and 60s. When I learnt that San Francisco had a small and vibrant Filipino community in the 20s, I really wanted to slide someone in there somewhere, just a nod to the women in that essay? I'm so very glad you liked these two ( ... )

Congratulations, Jay. So very glad to see this posted, and I'm excited to see your final edit here, bookleggers and all. I've bent your ear enough over this, but allow me again to say how perfectly you've captured the time period, everything so vivid and tangible. You've placed Sam and Dean in this world and still kept them true to themselves, no small feat there. As for your ending...yeah. You're golden; you nailed it.

As always, a pleasure (and not at all a slog--never think that). It's been a treat to see this story take shape. Thank you.

Thank you. And thank you so much for your help - not just the things you said, but the things you didn't say. That, really, I did appreciate.

In the interests of, er, history, I'm just going to mention that in retrospect, writing a historical fic was really good fun? Not just material culture but the words - I have a whole set of bookmarks on hobo slang and regional slang, gay slang and NY society slang, and watching the way people relate to each other *then* through language was fascinating. I'm pretty sure you know this, I'm just pimping hstorical fic to you!

But, really, thank you.

Oh quickreaver, I'm not entirely sure you'll like it! I honestly seem to be moving further away from the Sam and Dean we know and love with each story, and this one... eh. But I am really, truly glad that you had the pleasure of anticipation, and thank you so very much for taking the time to mention!
