Title: painted black (i'll be your downfall)
Pairing: Adam/Kris
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~300
Author's Notes: A fic about Kris's black thumbnail; title stolen from matchbox twenty's Downfall
Summary: Adam cocks his head to the side and smiles, slowly. "What did you think I meant?"

He paints Kris' fingernails black in the lead up to rock week, and Kris raises his eyebrows (doesn't pull his hand away). "I'm just going to take it off."

Adam rocks back on his heels, looks mock-hopeful, and Kris snorts, glances - away.

"It'll stain your fingernails," Adam warns him. "It takes weeks to fade."

"I'll just do your thumb," Adam promises, his hand steady and sure. "See if you like it."

"I won't," Kris replies.

"If you've never done it," Adam says, without looking up, "then how do you know?"

* * *

With his eyeliner, Adam carefully prints up Kris' thumb BLOW ME, and Kris can only stare at him, a prickling heat creeping up his neck, and Adam holds his gaze for as long as possible before pencilling in a tiny arrow to Kris' nail.

He cocks his head to the side and smiles, slowly. "What did you think I meant?"

* * *

(When he reaches for Adam's fly, Adam catches him by the wrist. "You'll smudge," he says, his thumb making tiny circles on the inside of Kris' wrist, and Kris' laugh is little more than an exhalation.

"Then I won't use my hands," he says, almost innocently, the fingers of his other hand mapping the seam of Adam's pants, and for the first time in a history that spans only a few months, he has the upper hand, as Adam's eyes slip closed and his head falls back).

* * *

On Tuesday evening, he chews the side of his still-black thumbnail, and Adam - stretched out on the other couch, propped up on his elbow, hand in his hair (smile a little lopsided, a little knowing) - doesn't pretend not to watch.
