Summary: "Six months," he says, tossing his binder onto his desk, "Six months without pay."
"Six months," he says, tossing his binder onto his desk, "Six months without pay."
"Bobby-" is all she says, all she can say, and he stares back at her.
His hand comes up to cover his mouth for a moment, before he shrugs. "See you in six months."
*
She calls him, though - calls him sooner than he expects - suggests breakfast at a diner between his place and work, and he hesitates
(but says yes).
*
It's nothing regular; she calls him, or he calls her (it's mostly her, in the beginning, but he always comes), and it's usually breakfast (her lunch breaks aren't long or predictable enough), but sometimes it's coffee, after she gets off, and she's tired and irritable, but he's missed that part of her, too.
*
Sometimes, she calls just to check on him, and he pretends not to know what she's doing.
*
It's different without the buffer of work.
She talks, briefly, of the cases she lands, but she's not fishing for help
(she got to Major Case before - before and without - him).
*
She doesn't mention a partner, and he doesn't ask.
*
He listens, amused, to the office gossip she's picked up (who's in for hearings, who's back on desk duty - the latest on the Captain and Rodgers, because they've been watching them for months, and it's not nearly as much fun without someone there to share in her silent, wry amusement), and she doesn't take as much joy in it as she used to, but he still likes the lilt to her voice.
*
When she tucks her hair behind her ears, his gaze lingers, his eyes soft
(and she likes it).
*
He asks about her nephew, because she still lights up when she talks about him (and that still makes his chest ache); she mentions that her sister's looking at grade schools, and he wonders if it's really been that long.
*
She picks up the bill, usually, and he lets her
(he argues, weakly, the first time; she says he can buy her lunch on his first day back, because she's more sure than him that that's how this is going to end).
