St. Francis The Photographer?

As someone who takes photos; some have called me a “photographer”, it is often I get tangled up in all things material that are used to that end. That is, all the gear that we all “want” in order to perform the task of taking photos. Such gear lust often enters our heads and makes us believe that, if we had that one lens or that one body, we would ( Read more... )

Say 3 hail mary's, 2 hello dolly's and give me your equipment and all will be forgiven, my son.

My lust is strong as well, but I have no shame.

Such gear lust often enters our heads and makes us believe that, if we had that one lens or that one body, we would, somehow, become even better at our craft.

Of course, once the lust takes hold and the money is spent and the realization hits that, in reality, the $2,500 lens or the $5,000 body doesn’t help our photos one iota we enter “justification mode” and try to make ourselves believe that, in fact, we really do need these items. “It’s the only lens on the market that is a f1.0 and therefore it will help my low light shooting!!” as though we shoot a lot of time in extremely dim lit situations and, heaven forbid, can never use any flash or artificial lighting."seriously... i go thourhg this often ( ... )

No matter what you do, almost every (in fact, every?) hobby involves some degree of lust. Be it models (scale or women ;) ), trains, photography, cars, whatever floats your boat. You're always be wanting the latest bestest gadget.

Look at it this way .. There are more expensive hobbies to be into than photography ... Cocaine, Cars come to mind ...

And if you still don't want your gear I'll take it all off you ;)

Great resolution, but don't feel guilty for what you have. Instead, help those less fortunate. Use those photographs for good and donate proceeds from sales to those who can't afford a lot of "stuff". Or, donate your time to teaching at-risk youth about photography. These are just ideas using photography as a starting point, but of course it doesn't have to have anything to do with photography. Bottom line: Enjoy what you have, guilt-free, and use your Christian and Catholic values to help others.
You work for what you have and you're fortunate. There's nothing wrong with that. No one is more or less worthy of having material goods.

On a cheeky note, lust is one of the seven deadly sins. It also tends to be a favourite sin. It's way better than sloth or envy. Resolve to redirect that lust from photography equipment to women (or men)!
