Today I learnt that World War II is officially not over.
It appears that Russia has never signed a pact with Japan to officially end hostilities because both countries claim ownership of the Kuril Islands just south of the Kamchatka peninsula. On paper, there is still a war.

its true. there was just recently a diplomatic blowup over the kurils too.

Oh I knew they'd been arguing about it since the end of the war, I just didn't know it actually prevented them from signing a treaty to cease hostilities. Diplomacy is funny like a really funny thing that's all diplomatic like.
