We had a few newbies come, which seems rare to me lately. And for most of the munch they went ignored. I know there's a school of thought that says "well, they can be wall flowers until they're ready to jump in," but I still felt a little pang when I saw one pretty much go speechless the whole night, making furtive glances my direction periodically, and then he slunk away back into the dark toward the end. That *is* a slippery slope. I find that some newbies like to just come in and observe quietly for the first few times. I know it's happened at the Santa Cruz munch on more than one occasion. The Friday venue doesn't really allow for someone to watch from afar (unless they're hanging out in the courtyard). The problem is, not *all* newbies are like that. Some like to be put on the spot a bit (myself included) and made the center of attention for a few moments. However, the shy ones tend to *really* not like this. I really have no idea how to solve this problem... unless we added some sort of formal structure to the munch (ICK

Yeah, I know. I just was feeling this during the munch and wanted to share it. Not sure I see it as a problem to fix. I do agree that the venue does make it harder to actually splinter off and have more private chats and such. I sometimes feel the Wednesday munch is too splintered, but I can see where that offers a way to deal with situations like wall flowers or shy folk. :)
"You going to the other side would have allowed me unfettered access to the gorgeous beauty sitting beside you."
LOL! Well there were a few minutes where I left the room to take a phone call. You could have easily swooped in during my absence... :D
i made points several times to speak with him directly and draw the boy out--- some folks like to sit quietly and watch the antics( i did see him laugh a few times) and i think he had a good time.

I was chatting it up and was a wee bit distracted (lots of things distract me.). I will attempt to be more observant in the future. 8)
