Oh, sweet shrieking Jesus, this is brilliant. Thank you to canuckgirl for the link. This is the same excerpt she posted that sent me over to read the entire entry:

Maybe it's just, I cast my eyes back on the last century ...

FDR: Oh, I'm sorry, was wiping out our entire Pacific fleet supposed to intimidate us? We have nothing to fear but fear itself, ( Read more... )

I think the real myth about terror is that somehow it is new. Look to Palestine after WWII, Algeria, Ireland throughout the 1920's and again in 1970-2000, Kenya in the late 1950's, Bader-Meinhof in Germany, the Red Brigade in Italy, ETA, the Munich Olympics, aircraft hijacking throughout the 70's and 80's, even in some ways IndoChina. Terror of some sort or another has been a constant background to my life. If you have been immune in the US (and to be honest I don't think you have) then it was because you chose not to see what there was to see.

There is no need to panic, or indeed to have a War on Terror. The solutions to all of these issues are political, and a full and meaningful non-partisan engagement in world issues would be the best legacy that any person of power could leave.

Sorry, I realise I made a huge error in the above. What I meant to say was 'If you have been immune in the US before 9/11'

I don't think it affects us Brits as much at Americans
Prior to 9/11, the US had very little in the way of terrorism to deal with. The Brits have been living with it since the 70's.
For us it's like....

Policeman: Sorry sir you can't come down this street, there's been a bomb
Us: Ahhhhh, ok.. well, there's another chemist in Tottenham Court Road, so I'll just swing by New Oxford Street instead, and I can get there that way... no worries.

To be honest, I think our respective governments are making too much of it. More chance of dying in a car crash.

Besides, as long as we have the big man John Smeaton, we're fine :)
