I think it's okay to correct people's spelling from time to time, assuming it can be done in a non-confrontational manner. A lot of people on lj are still in high school, and I know there was a period in my own life (10-12, maybe?) when I was acquiring vocabulary at a much faster rate than I was acquiring spelling.

Based on the tone of your post, it sounds like you were arguing with an idiot about something when this came up, so it probably doesn't apply. :)

No, it was something I came across in one of the communities I sometimes read. There was definitely no argument, as pointing out something like this to a complete stranger in a community setting would be beyond obnoxious. There's no reason to embarrass this person over something that probably doesn't bother anyone but me. This was just venting.

This IS the same group of people who think 'meme' is pronounced mee-mee.

Not that I'm suggesting you're /surprised/ they need to be clubbed half to death with a dictionary... ;)

Because that's who the world revolves around, right?

I think I need a dictionary on a stick. It'll be my version of a cluebat.

I have a three-pound 'condensed/miniature' Oxford English that'd fit well on a broomstick...

Lately (well, since I started playing WOW, honestly) I've been wishing for the mind powers required to electrocute people through their own keyboards. "I'm sorry, your spelling is beyond all realms of decency or literary/artistic creativity. I am compelled to freshen the gene pool. *GZZZNORT* "

You know when you set up your account and it asks you what type server you want? PvP, Role-playing, Role-playing PvP, and all that? I wish it asked about spelling and grammar preferences, too.

Since I was a child, I have hated the use of misspelled words as trade names. I remember feeling particularly disgusted by the brand name Taystee. When I was ten, I found it insulting to my intelligence. Now, I see that it puts the entire language at risk. That probably sounds a little overblown, but I really believe that if we can't all agree to use the same dictionary, we will not be able to communicate effectively with each other.

One of my biggest beefs with LGATs (like Landmark Education) and cult "religions" like Scientology is their profuse, exclusionary jargon. Landmark even introduced redundant non-words like "ongoingly" as part of their "language" for self-expression. Hideous.

It's worse than hideous. It's "enfurificating"...

I can't really complain much about people making up words because I certainly do my share of that, but sweet shrieking Jesus, how I hate it when intentionally misspelled words gradually take the place of the properly spelled words. That also applies to things like "sortof," "kindof," and "nevermind." *shudder*
