Blargh and Babble

Sep 12, 2006 15:08

Today is a downish sort of day. There's no particular reason for it that I can figure out. It just sort of is. Blargh.

I am slightly less busy at work today than I have been in weeks. It certainly isn't that I haven't anything to do, but there are fewer things with looming deadlines that have to be done right this second oh my god go go go!, ( Read more... )

welsh, baking, jobby job, rhys bowen, fall, hooray beer!, manicure, cooking

Two of my teachers used to talk about us in Welsh. Nobody knew what they were saying but you could see in their faces it wasn't flattering.

*snerk*

That is hilarious. If I ever do learn Welsh, I want to know it well enough to talk about my future children in front of them. Hee! Of course, that pretty much means I'll have to have someone learn with me so I'll have someone to talk about my future children with. Otherwise I'm just talking to myself, and I can make up my very own secret language for that.

I used to go to a Thai restaurant in Tallahassee where I'm pretty sure the servers talked about us in Thai while standing right there at our table. I cannot begin to imagine what they must have been saying, but I'm pretty sure there was a lot of mocking our pronunciation of the menu items.

So I'm a slackery type when it comes to my slacking, and I didn't read anything here at LJ yesterday. I so do not cook cornbread. I don't think it's an endeavor that one should undertake lightly. And if I want the cornbread, it has to be goooood. So I go to mom's and make her cook it. :D Seriously, mom makes the best cornbread EVER! No clue how she does it. But it's good stuff. I like the oven kind okay, but her fried on top of the stove kind is heaven. Maybe I can make her make me some now that the English are here?

As far as speaking Welsh goes, I'll take your nos da, and raise you a cadair and a planhigyn. That's all I've got. But I can tell you where I learned to say chair and plant. (Like how I translated for you?)

Sweet! Thank you for the link.

I have bach now, and Cymraeg, and eisteddfod. Do you want to read the Evan Evans books? I can send them to you. Media mail is superfantastically cheapcheap. And then I can just snag them again when I'm there for Christmas.

I really thought you made your cornbread. I think I remember Mom saying that you did. Huh. She really does make the best cornbread evar, doesn't she? And I'm with you. The fried on the top of the stove sort is fantabulous. I need to learn how to do that. Is it still self-opening?

Almost self-opening. It doesn't kind of fall open the way it used to, but you don't need a knife so much--except to apply the correct amount of butter, of course. I don't know what the ehll eisteddfod is, and I can't be bothered to look. You win. But I'll win when I get my birthday tattoo. Can't wait! I will be so cute. And of course, mom is thrilled that I'm celebrating the whole welsh heritage thing in tattoo form. Keeps talking about Aunty Mary.

Oooh, which tattoo is this? My Scwelsh heritage tattoo design is the one in this icon. I'm very much looking forward to it. :)

I can't be arsed to look and see if your dear sister told you to bake or fry, but my suggestion for chili is to bake. And go to the Family Dollar and get yourself a $7 cast iron skillet and season that puppy. I used House Autry self-rising corn meal, but honestly, I think I might just get another brand (like Martha White) next time, because the crust didn't crunch the way I wanted it to. I prefer muffins to a pan, on the whole, but really I'll eat it all ( ... )

Oh, and also? I use the hell out of some Texas Pete or Tabasco hot sauce for spiciness.

And if you want to go all nuts, get some pickled jalapenos, chop up a few, add them to the pot while it's simmering, and also add a little of the pickling juice. Fantastico.

Another hint - add a couple teaspoons (or several if you're insane like me) of cocoa powder (unsweetened). It is tres yum. And super Mexican. :D

Yum! That is all fantabulous advice and information. Thank you!

Also? I had no idea about the hoe-cake thing. Huh. I always wondered what the hell a hoe-cake was.
