mini-rant and rash generalization

here is a little fact about myself: i am not a very sympathetic person. i definitely express sympathy when the drama at hand is undeserved or unintentional, or just generally out of the control of the person experiencing it. i am NOT however, sympathetic when the person has made poor choices and CHOSEN drama. one can make excuses all day for people ( Read more... )

You know, it always sounds better when other people say/write it than when I do. Very well put. Very.

Yeah! Amen! drmellow and I bitch about this all the time to each other, mainly to retain our sanity. Why does everyone in the world have such an acute sense of self-entitlement these days? Ugh.

...bills that cannot be paid because you keep purchasing pets...

If I didn't think it would cause an irreconcilable rift amongst my family, I'd print out this post and distribute it to some of my relatives on that point alone. Then again, that might not be such a bad thing. Maybe I could just distribute it anonymously...

I feel generally uncomfortable about this post. I'm not entirely sure why. I agree with you on most of the bullet-pointed cases, but I could see it being applied to other cases that would make me much less comfortable. The kinds of "good decisions" you talk about aren't common sense to all people, and sometimes aren't available to all people.

We all have our glass castles. It's seems unfair to start flinging the word "irresponsible" around too freely.

Just a thought. I can see too many possible bullet-points that could have been added, that could have applied to me, so I'm not a fair judge, perhaps.

it is not hard to argue that some people make a bad choice, and then repeatedly make that bad choice over and over, all the while complaining about the repercussions of that bad choice.

like i said, there are circumstances in which one could argue that people were never taught to make good decisions, and that i can buy and allow for. in most cases, amongst my peers that was not the case. most upper middle class suburbanites have had every advantage (sometimes I think this is as much a negative as a positive.) and it is these cases that i find issue with. but, i will completely support your right to disagree with me. Are you my twin. I just had about 20 people lopp me off of their friends' lists due to me posting something similar.

That said, I agree with you.

People refuse to believe that there are consequences for their actions. there are consequences to what you do, there are consequences to what I do. Sometimes you really must choose the lesser of two evils, but it seems that MANY MANY People choose the one that does them the best right now -- regardless of the consequences later.

I still think that you and I would get along quite well.
