Online World: Mixed Bag

Aug 17, 2011 19:54

So, it's been awhile since I've populated message boards and online communities with a shipper's zeal supporting a favorite couple.  I had forgotten the joy of reading spoilers in favor of my couple or meeting lots and lots of people who suffer the same affliction of shipping said couple.  I'm not alone!  There are other people who like them!  Of ( Read more... )

...Where are you finding anti-M/M 'shippers? The forum? That's the only place I could think of...

Reasons M/M will get together at the end of S2 -- well, silverducks had a great post about it a couple weeks ago, but to me, other than they broke up for a STUPID reason at the end of S1 (and it wasn't because they didn't love each other), bear in mind Mary will be 26 and Matthew 32/33 at the end of S2. Meaning people will start to look at them funny if they're not at least engaged by then! So, we have judgmental period piece history on our side. ;p (also, I can't see either of those two obstacles love interests sticking around past a season).

I don't know which couples you 'shipped in the past, but I'm guessing they didn't go to the races together and weren't photographed together all the time to promote the show either. ;p

Also, someone asked MD if they were going to get together, and she said "Aha!" ;p

Oh thank you! I just need to hear some positive news. I just posted on TWoP against someone who is suddenly shipping Mary/Sir Richard. Now, if it turns out they are a possible pairing, I will learn to let others post their excited remarks about such a couple go by, but when we've not even seen them yet, I hardly think there is any need to get excited about them. Reminds me of the people posting Pro-Matthew/Sybil when Sybils crush (which was all of 1 scene which was all about Mary's reaction, and possibly Isobel noticing Mary's reaction).

As for my curse, I have posted previously about it. One example is a few weeks ago listing two examples (which were the worst two) that broke my heart. The second one being especially bad as the couple had phenomenal chemistry but a bad writer and a bad RL breakup between the two actors led to my own misery ( ... )

Oh geez, do NOT use TWP as a gauge of anything 'ship-related. :p I stopped going there and my blood pressure is SO much lower (I remember they thought they were so clever, they had it all figured out that DA was going to mirror Little Women, until...oops, M/S is less viable in S2 than Cora/O'Brien ;)

I don't think we were LJ Friends when you posted that, but aww... As a former GSR supporter (emphasis on former -- I hate them now ;p ) I apologize. Aww, Charlotte/Daniel was sweet.

A brief study of your 'ships, though, leads me to believe you don't tend to choose the "main" canon pairings. I mean, the ones with the most screentime. M/M have tons of screentime, they're so super canon that everyone 'ships them except them (I mean, VIOLET is a 'shipper, for crying out loud! ;p ) and since it appears the entail is going to remain exactly the same, I reiterate: in order for DA to have a happy ending, Matthew has to marry Mary. Otherwise, Cora's money/Robert's hard work/Violet's history goes to the distant cousin. (granted, who they like ( ... )

Oh dear. I should have checked before I mentioned CSI. I never liked GSR but I didn't hate them. THey didn't bother me. Oh I won't get into it. I blame William Peterson on that ( ... )

I don't know your other ships, but I know exactly where you're coming from, as I spent my teenage years as a diehard Harry/Hermione shipper (sorry!!) and I know what it's like to invest so much time, theories and emotion in something that doesn't happen. I guess after that (and Doctor/Rose - to a certain extent, Jo/Laurie, Gene/Alex and all the others that didn't happen) I've put up walls of resistance so I can try to pretend I can deal with M/M not happening.

I agree with eolivet's reasons for why they should end up together so I just hope it works out like that ( ... )

It's hard to get upset about the H/H shippers when the movies focused on them. My favorite relationships are love/hate so that's why I really preferred R/H anyway.

As for Richard/Mary working out I may have to hurt someone. I do see him as a learning lesson for Mary so in that I will be glad she went through the experience but I'm sure I can never like him as I never liked Wickham.

Let's ignore the Mary haters! silverducks August 18 2011, 10:59:50 UTC
I have to say, when I first started going on message boards about DA (TWoP and IMDB being the main ones), I was pretty shocked at how few people shipped Mary/Matthew. A lot of people on there didn't like Mary and so didn't like M/M. It really got to me at first, but then I stopped caring - it was really the same few people on the forums who kept on posting and then I discovered a LOT of love for M/M in other places!

I avoid those forums now because they really often aren't friendly places - they seem to attract people who don't just like to argue, but to slate and slander characters and even users (I've been insulted a few times!).

Anyway, I won't go into my big long speil all about why it WILL be Mary/Matthew in the end, because that's all on my blog post here (shameless promotion, sorry!). But really, I am convinced it WILL be them, it's just a question of when and I don't think Fellowes would be stupid enough to drag it out past series 2 - Christmas special at the latest ( ... )

TWOP doesn't seem to have a lot of M/M shippers but with the press coming out so in favor of M/M, the show seems to get the idea that they are the preferred choice.

In fact that one article said a poll on set they wanted M/M to get together.

One reason I also think Julian won't drag M/M into S3 is because S1 ended so badly for them. A nice touch to the end of S2 is to have them come together.

I think Mary and Matthew are the main couple and probably the most popular. You can't really take the viewpoints of just one or two forums. There is A LOT of love for M/M in other places - and that's just stuff on the internet! The fact that the media chooses to focus on M/M show they know they're popular too ( ... )

Well I'm American and I love her (though Matthew is my favorite.) I think what was a good idea, if not a little too over the top, was the Pamuk thing. I would have been interested in seeing if Mary could have fallen in love with Matthew without the Pamuk situation obviously changing her to some degree, but many people wouldn't have had the patience or interest in it, I'm sure. I got my friend into the show, and while she was glad to see some solace in Mary after the Duke thing, it was Pamuk which helped her root for Mary somewhat as her own character and not just because I was telling her too. :D ( ... )
